Sava is one of 22 regions ( Faritra ) of Madagascar . The region is also spelled SAVA region , as the name comes from the abbreviation of the four district capitals of the region: Sambava , Andapa , Vohémar and Antalaha . The SAVA region is the global center of the cultivation of spiced vanilla .
In 2014 there were around 1.3 million people in the SAVA region. Like the other regions of Madagascar, the SAVA region was founded in June 2004. After a referendum in April 2007, the SAVA region became independent from the previously superordinate province of Antsiranana .
geography
The SAVA region lies in the northern tip of Madagascar and borders the Indian Ocean in the east . In the west Sava borders on the Diana region, in the south on Sofia and Analanjirofo . Sava has an area of 25,518 km². The capital is Sambava .
The city of Antalaha on the west coast is known as the world capital of vanilla .
