Itasy is one of 22 regions ( Faritra ) of Madagascar in the central highlands of the island. In 2014, 750,000 people lived in the region. With an area of 6,993 km² it is the smallest region in Madagascar. The 22 regions of Madagascar were founded in June 2004. On April 4, 2007, Marc Ravalomanana held a referendum on an amendment to the constitution, which established a new administrative structure without provinces from October 2009. The regions thus became the first administrative unit.

The Itasy region is located in the center of Madagascar. In the northwest, Itasy borders on Bongolava , in the northeast on Analamanga and in the south on Vakinankaratra .
The Lac Itasy is located in the center of the region. The very nutrient-rich alluvial soil can be found on its banks . There is also volcanic soil to the west and south-west of Soavinandriana and Ferralsol near Miarinarivo , Manalalondo and Ambohimandry .

Economy and Infrastructure

Analavory , located in the center of the region, is a traffic junction. The national road 1 (RN 1) comes from the east and turns north in the town towards Tsiroanomandidy . The national road 1b (RN 1b) branches off from the national road 1 at Analavory and leads in a westerly direction via Tsiroanomandidy to the national road 8a (RN 8a) at Maintirano on the west coast. The National road 43 (No. 43) branches off in Analavory from the RN 1 and results in the southeast direction over Ampefy, Soavinandriana and Ambohibary to the national road 7 (No. 7).
