The carpet chameleon ( Furcifer lateralis ) is a species of chameleon that occurs on the entire island of Madagascar (except for north and north-west Madagascar ) . So far, two different sizes of the animals are known, the smaller species measures around 20 cm, the larger species, often referred to as major , reaches over 30 cm. It is still unclear whether it is an independent subspecies or a local form; major is currently not recognized as a subspecies.

As the common name suggests, Furcifer lateralis is a very colorful species of chameleon. The species referred to as " major " has a predominantly continuous green base color with larger white to pink dots on the sides of the body. This species is nowhere near as colorful as the panther chameleon .
