Vohémar ( Malagasy : Vohimarina) today also called Iharana , is one of the larger cities in the district of the same name in the Sava region on the northeast coast of Madagascar with around 15,000 inhabitants (2001).

The coastal city has a seaport and a domestic airport (Vohimarina Airport, IATA code: VOH, ICAO code: FMHV).

The next larger port city is Antsiranana (295 km).

history

Vohémar is of Islamic origin and may even have been the first part of Madagascar to be settled by Arabs in the 9th and 10th centuries. Muslim graves from the 17th and 18th centuries have been found during excavations in the area. Egyptian coins from 1137 were also found in ruins near Vohémar, as well as porcelain from China, which was imported into Madagascar in large quantities from the 15th century. In 1598 the city was completely destroyed by the Portuguese. The other Arab settlements in northern Madagascar were also attacked and looted by soldiers from the Portuguese ships that sailed in the waters from 1500 onwards.

Personalities who have worked in the city

Tree frog: Hyperolius rutenbergi

Christian Rutenberg , a German naturalist and ophthalmologist, lived in Vohémar from October 1877. He toured the wetlands to the west and the highlands. His scientific collection with some animals and over 600 plant species from Madagascar came to Bremen after his death , including a tree frog ( Hyperolius rutenbergi ), two species of spiders as well as 5 plant genera and 168 previously unknown plant species. Some were also named after Rutenberg. Rutenberg was murdered on August 25, 1878 in the Maningoza reservation by two local porters who accompanied him on his excursions.
