The Journey to the Mysterious Island is an American adventure film from 2012 and the second part in the Die Reise series. The film uses motifs from Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island and is the continuation of the 2008 film The Journey to the Center of the Earth .
action
Sean Anderson is arrested by police after landing his motorcycle in a swimming pool during a brief car chase. His stepfather Hank Parsons picks him up and takes him home to his mother Liz. Hank and Liz only find out later that Sean broke into a satellite research center to break the signal from a code. Hank learns that Sean believes the code came from his grandfather, Alexander Anderson, who went missing for two years. The two can decipher the code from Jules Verne's terms and learn that the code brings them to the books Treasure Island , Gulliver's Travels and Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island . Sean realizes that all books are set on an island and concludes that all books are about the same island. With the help of the island maps from the books, the two of them see that the maps belong together and that they result in an island with coordinates. Sean wants to leave immediately, but Hank forbids him. But then Hank changes his mind and allows him to. Sean and Hank travel to Palau and look for transportation there. But nobody wants to take her to the coordinates, except Gabato, who does the job to get money. Together with Gabato's daughter Kailani, who Sean falls in love with, they set off for $ 3,000. But the helicopter gets caught in a storm and they all crash and wake up on an island.
As the group explores the island, they discover that all large animals are small here, e.g. B. an elephant, and the small animals are large. On the way they are attacked by a gigantic lizard, but they are saved by Alexander. He leads them to his hut, which he built from the wreckage of the ship that brought him to the island. Kailani wants to send a distress signal to the mainland immediately, but Alexander informs them that the position of the communications satellite will not be back in the right place for two weeks. The next day he leads the group to the lost city of Atlantis . He explained to the others that the island sinks every 140 years and that this will not happen again for a few years. But Hank thinks that Alexander's calculations are wrong, as there is evidence that the island will sink in the next few days. The only way to save yourself is from Captain Nemo 's submarine Nautilus , which is hidden somewhere on the island. In Nemo's crypt, Kailani finds the logbook that documents the whereabouts of the ship, and they learn that it is in one of the caves on the coast. On the way to the cave they pass a gold volcano and Sean wants to look at it, but because of the lack of time they cannot. As the group crossed a large mountain on giant bees, they were attacked by birds that were looking for food for the bees. Sean and Kailani can save themselves, but Kailani slips off the bee and falls into the depths. Sean can save her and Kailani is very grateful to him. But they are still being chased by the birds, and Sean falls and sprains his foot, which slows the group down considerably.
The next morning, the water around her sleeping area rose sharply. Hank says they only have hours instead of days. They are about to leave when Kailani realizes that her father has disappeared. The group decides that Sean and Hank should go to the coast and find Alexander and Kailani Gabato. When Sean and Hank arrive at the coast, the cave is already under water. That's why they build compressed air cylinders out of plastic bags and dive down to the Nautilus. They are attacked by a huge electric eel and can escape into the submarine at the last second. When they want to start the submarine, they have to realize that the batteries are 140 years old. Hank came up with the idea of using the electric eel as a starting aid, which also works. At the same time, Kailani and Alexander are looking for Gabato, who went to the gold volcano. When they find him, Gabato digs for gold to enable his daughter to have a better life. But Kailani manages to persuade her father that they have to go to the coast as soon as possible. When they get there, they don't see a submarine and the island is slowly sinking. When the three are pulled underwater, they are picked up by Sean and Hank, who were able to launch the submarine. On board, Gabato has to take the helm as the sinking island blocks their way to the Pacific. Hank fires a torpedo to clear the way. On the way home, Kailani thanks Sean for bravery and kisses him.
Six months later: Kailani visits Sean because it is his birthday. Meanwhile, she speaks on the phone with her father, who is now wealthy in Palau and has the island's most popular tourist attraction, Captain Nemo's submarine Nautilus. Sean's grandfather is also coming for his birthday and giving his grandson Jules Verne's From Earth to the Moon . Liz groans and Hank says it's just a trip to the moon.

In 2009 New Line Cinema and Walden Media announced that there would be a sequel to the film Journey to the Center of the Earth and that Josh Hutcherson would once again play the role of Sean Anderson . A year and a half later it was said that Brendan Fraser and Anita Briem would not be there again. Instead, Dwayne Johnson was cast in the role of Hank Parsons , Sean's stepfather. Michael Caine and Kristin Davis joined the cast in September 2010 . On October 15, 2010 Vanessa Hudgens was signed as a love interest for Sean Anderson.
The budget was 79 million dollars .
