action

The film begins with two parallel narrative threads: Hal Jordan is introduced on earth , who leads a chaotic private life as a single, but works as a daring test pilot for the aircraft manufacturer Ferris Aircraft. Despite his success, Hal is reprimanded by his boss and hitherto unfulfilled childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris for being daredevil.

At the same time , reports are made of an association of intelligent extraterrestrial beings, the so-called guardians , who set themselves the goal of protecting the universe millions of years ago. They use the power of will to do this . This power of will can be channeled through green lanterns and special green rings to manifest thoughts or to travel through the universe. The equipped with this power individuals of different species, Green Lanterns (Green Lantern) called, are the protectors for one of 3600 sectors of the universe.

The Corps of the Green Lanterns had long ago captured the villain Parallax , a fallen guard who sought to replace the green power of will with the yellow power of fear . Instead of being able to use fear for the better, he succumbed to strength.

Parallax escapes its prison at the beginning of the film. After killing four of the strongest Green Lanterns and destroying two planets, a fifth Green Lantern named Abin Sur escapes badly wounded, alarms the headquarters of the Green Lanterns on planet Oa and makes an emergency landing on Earth. The green power of will he has sent out chooses Hal as his successor. As he dies, Abin Sur gives him his green ring and his green lantern and admonishes the young man to take the oath for the corps and to be aware of the honor and responsibility that now rests on him.

Ring and Lantern carry Hal to planet Oa, the home planet of the Green Lantern Corps . There he is to be trained in dealing with his new forces, but is faced with high expectations not only as the first human Green Lantern, but also as the successor to one of the best members of the corps. Since he has to admit that he is not so fearless and strong, he breaks off his training and returns to earth.

During his absence, Abin Sur, who died on earth, is autopsied. In this endeavor, the scientist Hector Hammond comes into contact with traces of the DNA of Parallax. This gives him parapsychic powers, but more and more loses his mind.

Finally, Hector, Hal and Carol meet at a Ferris Aircraft company dinner party. Confronted with the disappointed expectations of his successful father and the unrequited affection for Carol, Hector causes an accident in the helicopter in which his father is sitting. Hal uses his powers for the first time to mask the party guests, Hector's father and Carol, masked as the Green Lantern .

Back on Oa, it is revealed that Parallax is the former Guardian Krona, who himself became the embodiment of fear through the desire to control the yellow essence of fear. Sinestro, the leader of the Green Lantern Corps, believes that fear can only be conquered with fear and has a yellow ring made. He is ready to sacrifice the earth to save Oa. But Hal asks him not to use the yellow ring, but to help him defend the earth. This request is rejected by the guards, but Hal is allowed to return to his home planet to defend himself.

Back on earth, Hal saves Carol from Hector by offering him his ring. Parallax joins them and kills Hector because he did not manage to kill Jordan and then attacks Coast City . Hal then tries to destroy Parallax using the pull of the sun. He succeeds but loses consciousness and is eventually saved by three other Green Lanterns, who now congratulate him on his bravery.

Sinestro now officially instructs Hal to act as Green Lantern to protect the sector in which the earth is located.

During the credits you see Sinestro swapping his green ring for the yellow ring and mutating his green costume into yellow.

Reviews

"Turned extremely flat in the character drawings, the 3-D spectacle burns its flesh and blood protagonists, even though the cast with Peter Sarsgaard as Mad Scientist and Blake Lively as Hal Jordan's adored colleague is more than presentable."

- spiegel.de Jörg Schöning

“Reynolds doesn't do his thing badly at first by trying to combine arrogance, ambition and arrogance with an underlying insecurity. But the script, put together by at least four authors, does not give the hero the slightest chance to develop a broken character à la Peter Parker alias Spider-Man. All too quickly, HaI Jordan becomes the hero Green Lantern, and from then on the film is bright, loud and dull. [...] The milky, far too low-contrast comic worlds converted from 2D to 3D look almost like American NTSC television, but not like an excursion into brilliant new cinema technology. "

reception

The film cost $ 200 million with an original budget of $ 150 million. In addition, there were about 125 million US dollars in marketing costs. However, the gross profit was only $ 220 million worldwide. The film is one of the biggest flops in cinema history. The Hollywood Reporter said it needed at least $ 500 million in revenue for the film to be a box office hit.

In Germany, too, the number of visitors was rather low. Only 4.6 million US dollars were raised here. The direct competitor Captain America: The First Avenger had only made insignificantly more at 4.8 million US dollars.
