The American Sarah Jordan lives in London in 1984 . She is married to Henry Bauford, who comes from an entrepreneurial family.

Jordan meets Nick Callahan, a doctor at a charity event, who works in the war zones of Africa . He causes a scandal by presenting a starving child to the guests. When he is overpowered by security officers and led away, the little boy freezes to death alone in the dark night. Jordan is shaken. She buys food and medicine with all her money and accompanies the delivery to Ethiopia , where Callahan and his team work as a doctor in unimaginable poverty.

After some differences, Jordan finally leaves the camp as a loved one. You and Callahan part respectfully. Jordan's life is changing. She has a son, her husband loses his job, cheats on her while she works for the United Nations . Nick Callahan is now active in Cambodia . His team asks Sarah Jordan for help. So she finally accompanies a convoy with relief supplies again. The driver, a young Cambodian, tells Jordan how he lost his leg when he was kicked on a tell mine. A short time later the events get out of hand due to the war-like situation in the country, among other things Callahan's best friend and partner dies.

Jordan and Callahan are desperate and finally admit their love for each other. They spend an unforgettable night together. But Callahan sends Jordan back to London. He is convinced that he brings bad luck to the people he loves.

Years later, Callahan also works undercover for the CIA in Chechnya , in exchange for support for his charitable work, he is kidnapped by rebels. Jordan leaves her family, she now also has a daughter, and goes in search of Callahan. She finds him and tells him about their daughter. Both flee until Jordan steps on a land mine shortly before their destination . Callahan survives and visits Jordan's home in London where he sees his daughter.

Flemming Schock described the film on www.filmspiegel.de as a “hypocritical star cinema with a useful exotic backdrop”.

James Berardinelli criticized on ReelViews that the characters were not sufficiently elaborated. He praised the "charismatic" portrayal of Clive Owen and criticized the "lackluster" ("lackluster") portrayal of Angelina Jolie.

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

Angelina Jolie was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the category Worst Actress in 2004 and the film was nominated for the Political Film Society Award .
