Life

Martin Campbell began his career as a cameraman after moving to London from New Zealand in 1966. He first produced the comedy Black Joy (1977), which was then included in the program for the Cannes Film Festival , and the controversial British film Scum . He made his directorial debut with the police series Die Profis with Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw in the leading roles as well as the two popular BBC series Shoestring and Minder - Der Aufpasser .

With the successful television film Relly: Ace Of Spies in the mid- 1980s , Campbell was an indispensable part of the British film industry. The BBC ecothriller he directed, On the Edge of Darkness, about the fight of a militant environmental group against the nuclear industry, received six BAFTA awards.

In 1986 Campbell moved to Hollywood for the first time , where he directed the films Der Frauenmörder (1988) with Gary Oldman and Kevin Bacon , Defenseless (1991) with Barbara Hershey and Sam Shepard, and Escape from Absolom (1994). Other projects included the HBO film Witch Hunt in LA and two episodes of the NBC series Homicide .

Campbell achieved worldwide recognition with the James Bond film GoldenEye (1995), with which he gave new Bond Pierce Brosnan a successful debut. His next film, The Mask of Zorro , received an Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination. After other well-known projects such as Vertical Limit (2000), Beyond All Limits (2003) and the second part of the Zorro series with Antonio Banderas in the lead role, The Legend of Zorro (2005), he took over his second James Bond film, Casino Royale , which was very successful with audiences and critics. His most recent projects so far were the thriller Revenge with Mel Gibson and the comic book adaptation Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, which came to cinemas in 2011. The latter film in particular received scathing reviews and was also a catastrophic financial failure.

Since then it has become quiet around Campbell. In January 2012, he was hired by Endgame Entertainment to direct the thriller Umbra , but the project has not yet been completed. In 2017, The Foreigner appeared with Jackie Chan .
