The Watcher ( Minder ) is the title of a British television series that aired on ITV between 1979 and 1994.

The original main character, Terry McCann ( Dennis Waterman ) is a former professional boxer who, after serving a lengthy prison sentence for lack of other employment opportunities, works as a bodyguard for the crook Arthur Daley ( George Cole ), who works under the name of import / export merchant .

The series ran for a total of ten seasons, with Dennis Waterman , for whom the series was originally tailored, left after the seventh season. His role has been replaced by Arthur's nephew Ray Daley ( Gary Webster ).

The series was designed as a crime comedy, with the comic element becoming more and more emphasized over time. In the end, it was mostly about the unscrupulous crook Arthur sending his bodyguard to some rip-off that went wrong throughout history.

The real charm of the series lay mainly in the local color, which was of course lost in the German dubbing. In addition, the episodes - as was common at the time - were shortened for the German version, on the one hand to fit the time slot and on the other hand to make them suitable for the evening before by removing scenes of violence or nude scenes.

The original theme song is sung by Dennis Waterman .
