action

The framework story takes place in the 1960s. A doctor reports the death of her mother to a young woman. Since her mother has chosen her and her little sister as sole heirs, her drunken stepfather is upset and attacks them. When she resists, he includes them and wants at little sister pass away . The older sister manages to break free and shoots her stepfather with a pistol, injuring him slightly, but accidentally killing her sister by a ricocheted bullet. The stepfather tells the police that his daughter went mad after her mother's death and he is believed. He takes her to the Lennox House Mental Asylum in Brattleboro and arranges for the corrupt nurse Jones to have his stepdaughter lobotomy to cover up the background. The nurse forged the signature of the prison doctor Vera Gorski for 2000  US dollars . The lobotomy should be done in five days. In the moment immediately before the intervention, the level of action changes.

A patient about to undergo a lobotomy strips off a wig on a stage and introduces herself as Sweet Pea, an actress in an erotic entertainment act in a brothel . The original patient, now called a babydoll, was also taken to the brothel owned by pimp Blue Jones by a priest who looks like her stepfather . This is like the corrupt nurse. In five days, her virginity is due to be sold to a customer named High Roller. Until then, she should serve in the house. When the prostitute Rocket is almost raped by the brothel cook, who looks like the cook in the mental hospital, Babydoll frees her fellow sufferer.

The puff mother Vera Gorski, who resembles the prison doctor, orders that the babydoll should rehearse a dance with the other girls. As she dances, everyone falls into hypnosis and does not notice what is happening around them until she stops dancing.

Babydoll itself has a "dream in a dream" with action-fighting sequences during the dances. During her first dance, she slips into a world that is based on feudal Japan . There she learns from a wise man that she needs five things to escape: a map, fire, a knife and a key. The fifth is to solve a riddle. Then she has to assert herself against three overpowering samurai warriors .

After this first dance, Babydoll succeeds in convincing some of her fellow fates of her escape plan: the sisters Sweet Pea and Rocket as well as Amber and Blondie. While Babydoll performs their mesmerizing dances, the others are supposed to steal the necessary escape items.

During their second dream, Babydoll is together with the others on an alienated battlefield from the First World War , where they have to fight against undead German soldiers. There the wise man instructs them in their task. They succeed in preventing a German messenger from delivering a military site plan to the German Kaiser in a zeppelin . During this dance, Sweet Pea copies the map of the brothel in the pimp's office.

Blue Jones is so enthusiastic about the babydoll's performance that he lets her perform in front of the mayor, who is like a guard at the mental hospital. During their third dream, the co-fates find themselves in a medieval fantasy world . The wise man instructs them again: the women must defend themselves against hostile orcs and remove two fire crystals from the jaws of a baby dragon . Amber steals the mayor's lighter during the dance.

After the performance, however, Blue Jones suspects that a conspiracy is underway and confronts the women about it. They deny it, but decide to go ahead with their plan. But Blondie can't withstand the pressure and confesses to Vera Gorski and Blue Jones Babydoll's plan to escape.

Next, the women want to steal the knife from the brothel cook. Babydoll performs her fourth dance in which the four women are on a train in a futuristic world. The wise man explains to them that they have to defuse a bomb on the train that is protected by robots. You can assert yourself against the robots with mirror masks, fight your way to the bomb and defuse it; however, a robot succeeds in reactivating the bomb. Due to a short circuit, the music to the Babydoll's performance stops and the Babydoll wakes up too early from its dream world. As a result, the brothel cook notices that the girls are about to steal from him and stabs Rocket to death. When the music starts again, the babydoll continues to dance. In the dream world, defusing the bomb again is hopeless and Rocket sacrifices himself to save Sweet Pea. When the bomb explodes in the dream world, the pimp breaks open the kitchen door with his henchmen and sees that the cook killed Rocket. However, Amber can steal the knife and they can hide it. The pimp locks Sweet Pea in a soundproofed storage room because she is disturbed by the death of her sister.

Shortly before the performance, Blue Jones confronts the women. Vera Gorski wants to protect the girls, but Blue Jones first shoots Amber and then Blondie. Then he tries to rape Babydoll, but she stabs him with the hidden knife and takes his key with her.

Babydoll and Sweet Pea run away together. They set fire to the storage room to open the security doors and use the map to find the way out. However, there is a group of men in front of the brothel. Babydoll remembers that a riddle is still missing and realizes that the answer is herself. She sacrifices herself and distracts the men so that Sweet Pea can escape unnoticed.

Sweet Pea manages to get other clothes, while Babydoll finds herself in a room of the brothel together with the high roller. The moment she gets involved with him, the action jumps back to the mental hospital and a doctor performs the lobotomy.

Dr. Gorski appears and reports to the doctor, who resembles the high roller, that within five days the girl set a room on fire, stabbed a nurse and helped another patient escape. However, she herself did not order a lobotomy on the patient. When the doctor shows her the form, Dr. Gorski that the orderly forged her signature.

After the lobotomy, the patient is taken to a room where the nurse, who resembles Blue Jones, is left alone with her. Before he can do anything to her, the room is stormed by police officers who are led by Dr. Gorski were called.

The backdrop changes to a bus station . On her way to freedom, Sweet Pea tries to get on a long-distance bus , but is stopped by the police. However, the bus driver, who resembles the wise man from dreams, can convince the police officers that Sweet Pea has been his passenger for a long time and lets them ride on the bus for free.

The film ends with the question of whose story it is telling.

Segmentations and style of the film

After the exposure, the film takes place on three levels: in the mental hospital, in the brothel and in the dances. They are all rather somber. The darkest is the sanatorium, which is photographed almost in black and white, the brothel a little more colorful and the most colorful is the action sequences of the dances. The change between these levels is formally indicated by a close focus on the face of the babydoll and a change in the color scheme.

Reviews

Sucker Punch was received mostly negatively by critics. Rotten Tomatoes has a positive rating of just 23% based on over 200 reviews. Metacritic gives a Metascore of 33/100 based on 29 reviews. The users of the Internet Movie Database , on the other hand, rated the film with 6.1 out of 10 possible points based on almost 169,000 votes.

The critic Richard Roeper , for example, described the film as “an unrecognizable and hypocritical mess that proves that you can fill a film with scantily clad women and big guns and still be bored to death”. David Kleingers at Spiegel Online saw Sucker Punch as "sexist, stupid and ridiculous work" in which "embarrassments [...] are sold as provocation". “I walked out of this movie in a state of depression. Depressed that so much technical bravery could be thrown away, ”said James Berardinelli in ReelViews.

Nevertheless, the film was a cinematic success in Germany, and it was also received more warmly by German-language critics. He was able to record several at least partially positive reviews: “What is undisputed, however, is the entertainment quality of this frenzy of images supported by slow motion, freeze frames, image acceleration, deliberate exaggeration and acrobatic posing of scantily clad young amazons,” says Kino.de , for example . “However, Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch' quickly manages to develop an independence and to present it with exquisitely photographed images during the course of the film. The action scenes are also modern, fast and just right for creating a rocking movie night, ”summarized TV Movie . Rüdiger Suchsland from the FAZ reminded the work “strongly of Christopher Nolan's dream thriller Inception ”, he seemed “like its better, more consistent variant - because the unreal of dreams is taken really seriously, because lust and madness are recognizable, and Snyder in contrast to Nolan never tries to restore order in the end. ” Cinema also saw Sucker Punch as a“ [breathtaking] concept film for fanboys that compensates for a lack of depth with a visual language that literally pushes you into the cinema seat. ”
