action

In the Kovak family it is tradition that the male descendants become either undertakers or priests . Michael's father works as an undertaker in the USA and tries to let his son follow in his footsteps from an early age. For example, he is not afraid to call his son over when he is preparing his wife, who died early, for the funeral. Michael finally decides against the profession of undertaker and to study theology and is about to graduate.

However, Michael himself doubts his belief and tries to quit the seminar. However, his supervisor wants to avoid this and therefore sends the seminarians to Rome . There he should attend a seminar in order to be able to carry out an exorcism in the future . Father Xavier, the leader of the seminary, introduces Michael to the Jesuit Father Lucas, a very experienced exorcist. Lucas becomes Michael's tutor. He is in the process of casting out a demon from a young 16-year-old pregnant woman. Michael should help him. But he doubts whether the woman is really possessed by a demon. He believes she is more likely to have a mental disorder than when he finds out that his own father raped the daughter . But during the expulsion of the devil, the demon repeatedly mentions words and phrases that only Michael can know.

Between the sessions he looks around Rome and befriends the journalist Angelina. She wants to write an article on exorcism, but Father Lucas refuses to speak to her. She hopes to gain access to Lucas through the young seminarians.

In another expulsion of the devil, the demon leaves the body of the young woman and takes over Father Lucas. Michael's father dies but is prevented from traveling to America. After the death of his father, Michael begins to hallucinate and seeks support from Angelina. Father Lucas shows signs of obsession and asks Michael in a clear moment to tie him up and cast out the demon. During the exorcism, the demon tries to corrupt Michael's and Angelina's souls as well. Michael, who until now had doubts about his faith, begins to believe in the devil and thus finds his faith again. Eventually he can learn the name of the demon Baal and cast him out.

Eventually Michael returns to America and becomes a priest. Angelina wrote her article on exorcisms and you can see Michael hearing a woman's confession.

Reviews

"Colin O'Donoghue as Kovak and Anthony Hopkins as Father Lucas are a great duo of faith and doubt, beautifully staged by director Mikael Håfström."

“The viewer is shown in great detail how Satan rages in people. The cheap intention of the Swedish director Mikael Håfström to intensify the psychological fear effect through the undercooled, almost factual representation, is quickly seen through. The only highlight: Anthony Hopkins' acting skills not only strengthen the plot - he also makes the film reasonably interesting. But he did not succeed in a new The Silence of the Lambs . "
