Published every two weeks from the start, the magazine was now offered as a weekly newspaper every Wednesday from June 10, 2015 to June 7, 2018 and then reduced back to the original frequency. The last regular issue of Zitty was published on March 25, 2020 at this bi-weekly rhythm .

The Zitty was sold as a subscription magazine as well as in kiosks , bookstores , cinemas and over the counter. It was also available nationwide. From January 1, 2016, Zitty appeared together with tip on GCM Go City Media, in which Raufeld Verlag has a minority stake.

profile

magazine

In its early years, Zitty, like its predecessor Hobo, saw itself as part of the off- press and alternative press and, as a “Stattmagazin”, reported primarily on actions and events in the political counterculture . Customer and reader loyalty but she tried not least because of the long time printed for free, now paid classified ads to consumers, of which in particular the dating veritable cult status enjoy.

In addition to current reports and topic texts from Berlin and the surrounding area, it recently offered reports and reviews on current events such as concerts , plays , films , exhibitions and tips on restaurants , pubs, excursion destinations and shopping opportunities. In addition, issues such as homelessness , rental prices and urban development were critically examined.

In addition to his journalistic activities, Zitty had established its own series of events in Berlin. In 2012, the magazine organized ten art events in the “zitty_ART” series, six times the zitty film table quiz in Kreuzberg's SO36 , eleven times the literary event “zitty Reader's Lounge” and six extensive special events such as “zitty Reader's Lounge Special” or “zitty Concert”.

The competitor up until the very end was the city magazine tip , which was more commercial and focused on culture from the start, and was published with a similar layout and structure, postponed by a week until the end of 2015 under the umbrella of Raufeld Verlag GmbH . On April 1, 2014, Zitty was also affiliated to Raufeld Verlag GmbH with unchanged editorial staff . From the beginning of 2016, both city magazines were published by GCM Go City Media with a joint editorial team.

After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic , tip and Zitty published a joint monthly issue . On June 19, 2020 it was announced that Zitty will be hired in favor of tip . Some columns and the comic should be taken over. There are no plans to lay off permanent members of the editorial team; instead, fewer jobs are to be awarded to freelance journalists. In July 2020, the last joint issue of tip and Zitty was published and from September 2020 tip will be published every two weeks again.

Edition

Zitty was also affected by the crisis in print media, which began around the year 2000, accompanied by a sharp decline in print runs : According to IVW, the number of copies sold in the first quarter of 1998 was 67,013. The extensive newspaper reform carried out in spring 2015, including the changeover to weekly publication, accelerated the downward trend: In the third quarter of 2017, only 12,760 issues were sold, 3,126 of them as e-papers , of which 3,075 were again known as "other sales".

criticism

From 2007 the event data was processed by Cine Marketing GmbH . This met with criticism from various media, as the organizers now had to enter their dates for a fee, which could potentially exclude smaller providers.

Most recently, Cine Marketing GmbH offered the option of entering the data yourself and publishing it in this way. For this she then “only” demanded a one-time “setup fee” of 30 euros. The Cine Marketing supplies ten Berlin media with this event data , besides zitty also tip , the Tagesspiegel and the Potsdamer Latest News .
