Carnival Row is an American fantasy series by Travis Beacham and René Echevarria , the first season of which was released on Prime Video on August 30, 2019 . The German version has been available since November 22, 2019.

action

Carnival Row combines the plot of a crime film with fantasy elements in a steampunk city-state called "The Burgue" reminiscent of the Victorian era .

The Burgue wages a war against the "Pact", which is reminiscent of the Central Powers . Aside from the series action, the war rages in the home of various fantasy creatures, which then save themselves on the run to The Burgue . As a result, political and ethnic tensions between residents and migrants are growing in the city .

The center of these tensions will be the social hotspot around the eponymous street "Carnival Row". Here Inspector Rycroft Philostrate tries to solve a brutal murder case.

History of origin

In January 2015, it was announced that Amazon had signed a contract with Guillermo del Toro to produce Carnival Row . The series is based on an unproduced screenplay entitled A Killing on Carnival Row by Travis Beacham . Beacham also wrote the script for the series together with René Echeverria and director and executive producer del Toro. The pilot episode was ordered by Amazon in June 2016, with del Toro as the director. In May 2017, it was announced that Carnival Row would receive more episodes and Echeverria would act as showrunner . Paul McGuigan was announced as director, replacing del Toro, as del Toro was leaving Carnival Row production due to other projects . However, that same year, in November 2017, it was announced that Jon Amiel would replace McGuigan as director.

The main roles were cast in August 2017 with Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne . Furthermore, were David Gyasi , Karla Crome , Indira Varma and Tamzin Merchant confirmed the following month as main characters. Simon McBurney , Alice Krige , Jared Harris , Ariyon Bakare , Andrew Gower , Jamie Harris , Scott Reid and Anna Rust finally completed the cast of the series.

After five months of pre-production, filming for the first season began in autumn 2017. After 108 days of filming, filming was completed on March 14, 2018. In December of the same year the production returned to Prague to re-shoot a few scenes. Filming was completed in January 2019 and in June 2019 the eight-episode first season was announced for August 30, 2019.

One month before the first season was released, the series was extended by Amazon for a second season, which is already in production.

Idea: René Echevarria & Travis Beacham
Vignette Stonemoss escapes Pact soldiers on a ship with other fairy tribes that they helped escape from Pact-occupied fairy land. A storm at sea leaves Vignette as the only survivor. The ship belonged to Ezra Spurnrose, who lives with his sister Imogen in one of the wealthier areas of the Burgue. After losing a substantial profit on the shipwreck, he expects Vignette to work as a maid for Imogen. Vignette visits Carnival Row and meets her old friend Tourmaline, who is now a prostitute who lives and works at the Tetterby Hotel on Carnival Row. She reveals that Vignette's lover Philo is still alive. Now Philo is a police inspector investigating violent attacks on fairies. He discovers that the suspect is a seaman. He tries to catch the suspect, but the man commits suicide. Before doing this, he warns Philo that a "dark god" has awakened under the city. Vignette tells Philo that she knows he's alive. Imogen and Ezra are shocked to learn that their new neighbor is a faun named Agreus Astrayon. Absalom Breakspear, the city's chancellor, faces strong resistance from his rival Knight Longerbane. He and his wife, Piety, discuss their son Jonah, whom he warns against visiting the Carnival Row entertainment district.
2 2 Aisling Aisling Thor Freudenthal René Echevarria

A drunk Ezra tries to rape Vignette, but she attacks him in self-defense; Ezra files a police report accusing Vignette of stealing Vignette. Philo finds out about it and buys Vignette from him. Ezra tells Imogen that they are financially unstable, and he plans to mortgage the house to the bank to get another ship. Imogen has her own plans and is writing to Agreus to return his interest. Vignette joins the Black Ravens, a group of rebels who deal with contraband. She is assigned to steal a flag from the police headquarters. She succeeds in blackmailing Philo so that he can let her escape. Philo visits Darius, an old army friend who is currently in prison. Jonah is kidnapped while visiting Tourmalines on Carnival Row. Without a ransom note, Piety suggests consulting a witch. The witch Aoife Tsigani sacrifices Absalom's pet and tells him that Longerbane kidnapped his son. A flashback shows that Philo and Darius were soldiers of the Burgue Army and occupied a fairy village near a telegraph line. Philo is sent to find out if the fairies pose a threat. He finds a library that is guarded by Vignette. She threatens to conceal the existence of the library from him and is instructed by Mima to keep a watchful eye on him. Vignette helps the Burgue soldiers fix the telegraph line over a ravine where they are attacked by Pact soldiers who use injections to turn themselves into marroks (a type of wolf person). Darius is bitten and turns into a marrok. Philo promises to keep this a secret. Tourmaline and other fairies seek refuge in the village when their home is attacked by the Pact. Tourmaline speaks to Vignette, her former lover, and asks what her plans are with Philo after the war. Vignette confronts Philo with her future and he reveals that he is a half-blood orphan whose wings were cut off as a child in order to be considered human. The news comes that the Burgue are withdrawing their troops home. The pact attacks the village and Philo asks Mima to tell Vignette that he is dead to protect her. In the present, Vignette tells Philo that she will keep his secret to herself, but their love is over.

Costin Finch, the director of Philo's former orphanage and his foster father, is murdered. Philo encounters the murderer in the sewers after discovering that he has left traces of a faun and a troll. The priestess Sawsaan explains to Philo that the creature could be a shadow butcher, a golem that was resuscitated from various corpses using dark magic. To prove this theory, Philo asks the witch Tsigani to create a shadow slayer. Tsigani has to sexually attack Philo in the form of Vignette in order to get his semen. Shocked, Absalom agrees with Piety to take Longerbane into custody until he confesses to kidnapping her son. Agreus agrees to support Imogen if she helps him to gain acceptance in her community. Suspecting that Vignette is an informant, Dahlia orders her to find the real informant or to die. Tourmaline forces Philo to reveal the informant Hamlyn, who informs Philo that a deceased member of the Black Raven named Wren has been hired to dig up several bodies. Piety poisons the seriously wounded Longerbane and tells Absalom where to find Jonah. Vignette attacks Hamlyn, but he overpowers her and Philo shoots him. Dahlia names Vignette as Hamlyn's successor after bringing her his wing. Jonah is brought back to Absalom, but recognizes the sound of Piety's heels from captivity. Philo has a lunchtime with his landlady Portia Fyfe.

Over Ezra's objections, Imogen invites Agreus to a tea party with her friends, which proves to be humiliating for Agreus as he insists on equal treatment. As Agreus prepares to leave, Ezra appears at the tea party, overcomes his pride, and asks him to stay. Then Agreus gives him a check. Philo returns with painful memories and meets with the deputy headmaster, who reveals that Finch has traveled regularly to a company in Tetterby. After Longerbane's death, his ambitious daughter Sophie took over and declared herself against living with creatures. Fascinated by her, Jonah moves further and further away from his family. Street artist Runyon Millworthy's goblin performers are confiscated by the police and deported as unregistered pets. She tells him that they are very similar, but that he is still under the influence of his parents. Philo tells Portia he's a half-breed and she ends their relationship and throws him out. Vignette discovers that her library is on display in a Burgue Museum. She furiously attacks museum guests and is arrested for unauthorized access. During a procession, Quill sees another puck hit by an abusive foreman, which Cabal cites as evidence that humans will never accept the creatures. Imogen accompanies Agreus to a charity auction, where he impresses her with his wit. During the auction, Agreus outbids a haughty couple who previously insulted him. Constable Dombey forces Portia to reveal Philo's secret. Constable Berwick tries to explain Philo's theory about the Shadow Slayer, but fails to convince Dombey and Magistrate Flute. Instead, they believe Philo covered up the murders. Runyon tells Philo that the late Mr. Spurnrose, an admirer of Aisling, let her live in his house to give her a safe birth. Dombey plans to have Philo murdered before the trial. Runyon was hired as a tutor for Jonah and criticized him for his carelessness. In doing so, he causes Jonah to accept Sophie's offer to force his father out of power. Furious to learn that his father was protecting Aisling, Ezra tells Imogen that Agreus will leave her once he has achieved his goal. She visits Agreus, where they confess their mutual feelings and have sex. Cabal takes Quill into his secret society by having him kill the foreman. Philo and Vignette reconcile and discover that the murderer must be Philo's father who wants to free himself from his half-blood son. The murders were necessary to find out Philo's identity. Philo is removed from his cell by Dombey after being warned by Berwick. Instead of being killed, Philo is taken to an estate to meet his biological father Absalom.
