Andrew Gower (born November 8, 1989 in Aintree , Merseyside , England ) is a British actor who is best known for his role as Nick Cutler in the series Being Human and his portrayal of Charles Edward Stuart in the series Outlander . In 2010 he won the Spotlight Award for Best Actor.

Life

Andrew Gower was born and raised in Aintree in November 1989 . He first went to Davenhill Elementary School in Aintree and later attended Great Sanky High School in Warrington . As a child he was interested in acting and played in plays and musicals. In June 2005 he founded a school band called Emerson , which achieved some regional success as a quartet and also performed in the Cavern Club . From 2007 he attended Barrow Hall College in Warrington, where he prepared for high school and was a member of an amateur drama group. He then completed his acting training at the renowned Oxford School of Drama , which he successfully completed in 2010. In the same year he was awarded the Spotlight Prize for best actor . This is awarded every year to the best final students from all 21 British acting schools.

During his acting training, Andrew Gower appeared in a number of plays, including the role of Dan in a production of Arthur Miller's After the Fall . In his first professional role, he played the young cardiac surgeon in training Andrew Mullery in the British medical series Dr. Monroe . In preparation for this role, Andrew Gower also attended two bypass surgeries with real surgeons.

He had his first leading role in 2011 in the BBC-Three musical Frankenstein's Wedding , for which he took the title role of Victor Frankenstein. This play with dance and singing interludes was performed once on March 19, 2011 in front of 12,000 spectators in Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds and was broadcast live on television. During the performance, Andrew Gower was also able to demonstrate his singing skills by singing some of the songs himself. In 2012 Frankenstein's Wedding was nominated for a BAFTA in the “Sport & Live Event” category.

The following year, Andrew Gower took on the role of antagonist Nick Cutler in the British television series Being Human , which earned him widespread popularity and critical acclaim. After a guest appearance in the series Misfits , Gower initially returned to the theater and played the role of Seiffert in Manfred Karge's play The Conquest of the South Pole at the Arcola Theater in London. For this portrayal, Gower was proposed for an Offie Award. In 2012 Andrew Gower also lent his voice to the character of Lupine in the radio play The Diary of a Nobody , an adaptation by Andrew Lynch of the novel by George and Weedon Grossmith.

Andrew Gower returned to television in 2013. In the Canadian crime series Murdoch Mysteries, he played the famous detective Sherlock Holmes in two episodes of the sixth and seventh seasons . After a cameo in the series The Borgias , he was seen as Lord Strange in several episodes of the mini-series The White Queen .

The film debut of American comedian Jon Stewart Rosewater also earned Andrew Gower's first film role in 2014. He then took on the role of Gilbert Hankin in the second season of the British television series The Village and played Nicolas Myers in the second season of The Young Inspector Morse .

In 2015 Andrew Gower got the role of Roman Emperor Caligula in the mini series AD: Rebels and Martyrs and was also in the series We Are All Millionaires ( Capital ) as young, ambitious banker Mark. In 2016, Capital was awarded the International Emmy in the category "Best TV Movie or Mini-Series".

The following year Andrew Gower took on the role of the antagonist again and mimed Prince Charles Edward Stuart in the second and third season of the American television series Outlander , which is based on the book series of the same name by the successful author Diana Gabaldon . In 2016 Andrew Gower also made his debut in London's West End theater district , where he starred Winston Smith in a 1984 theater adaptation of George Orwell's at the Playhouse Theater .

The topic of a dystopian future accompanied Andrew Gower in his next projects. In 2017, he starred in the Netflix series Black Mirror as Rob in the third episode of the fourth season Crocodile . The BBC Radio 4 radio play Dark Visions: Speak also played in a future in which only “Globish”, an artificial language reduced to 1500 words, is spoken. Andrew Gower spoke in the "dystopian love story about the power of language" Lucien, one of the two protagonists.

In December 2017 it was announced that Andrew Gower would play the role of Ezra Spurnrose in the eight-part series Carnival Row , opposite Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne . Carnival Row was published worldwide on August 30, 2019 by Amazon Video . The series takes place in a Victorian fantasy world in which humans and mythical beings have to coexist. Also in 2019, two independent projects in which Gower was involved are expected to be shown: the short film Blessed are They that Fear the Lord by German director and writer Leoni Tenius was shot in 2017 in Shropshire and Snowdonia on the English-Welsh border; the shooting of the feature film Running Naked by Victor Buhler took place in summer 2018.

Andrew Gower stayed true to the Victorian era in his next project when he took on the role of Rupert Parker in the British crime series Miss Scarlet and The Duke . Parker is a shy but wealthy young man in 19th century London. Under pressure from his bossy mother, he proposes marriage to the series' main character, Miss Eliza Scarlet, even though he is homosexual. Miss Scarlet loves her independence and rejects the proposal, but a friendship develops between the two and Parker finances and supports Miss Scarlet in becoming the first female detective in London.

Gower has also finished his first own film project, a short film about the English singer Tommy Quickly (played by Gower), who was part of the Beatles music scene in the 1960s . Humpty Fu * king Dumpty was financed in 2017 by the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and realized by Andrew Gower and his fellow actor Stephen Walters . On May 8, 2020, the film was released on the official HumptyFilm.com site.
