Stephen Walters (born May 22, 1975 in Merseyside , England ) is a British actor who is best known for his work in British film and television productions. One of his best-known roles is his portrayal of Angus Mhor in the Outlander series . He was nominated for the Royal Television Society Award for his acting performance in the drama episode Ragged .

Life

Stephen Walter's acting career began at the age of 14 when he took on roles in a number of British series. In 1994, Walters starred in Jim Morris' television movie Blood on the Dole , for which he received critical acclaim. The British television playwright Alan Bleasdale then advised Walters to attend an acting school.

After studying at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School, Walters played other roles on British television, including Ian Glover in the 1996 television film Hillsborough , which deals with the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, and which was awarded a BAFTA for best drama . Stephen Walters had his first film role in 1999 on the side of Robert Carlyle in the comedy Plunkett and Maclean - Against Death and the Devil . The HBO series Band of Brothers (based on the book of the same name by historian Stephen E. Ambrose ) was Walter's first international production in 2001. In the following years Walters worked several times with the British producer and director Matthew Vaughn ( Mean Machine - Die Kampfmaschine , Layer Cake ), as well as Guy Ritchie ( Revolver ) and Christopher Nolan ( Batman Begins ).

After a year off, Stephen Walters returned in 2007 in the movie Hannibal Rising - How It All Began Back, in which he played Zigmas Milko, one of the victims of Hannibal Lecter .

In 2013, Walters played the actor and political activist Ricky Tomlinson in the episode Ragged (from the Playhouse presents series ), for whose portrayal he was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award and received high praise from the real life Ricky Tomlinson.

In the same year Walters played the role of Crispin Ingham, a sadistic teacher from Derbyshire, in the first season of the series The Village . The filming of Outlander prevented that he could take on this role in the second season of the series. Walters previously worked on several projects with director Brian Kelly, with whom he directed the NBC series Dracula (alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers ) in Budapest and AD: Rebels and Martyrs in Morocco.

Angus Mhor, Stephen Walter's role in the American time travel series Outlander , was expanded and rewritten especially for the film adaptation of the novel series of the same name by bestselling author Diana Gabaldon . Together with Rupert MacKenzie (played by Grant O'Rourke ), the two became absolute fan favorites and Diana Gabaldon referred to them as " Laurel and Hardy of the 18th century".

In early 2018, Stephen Walters could be seen again on the UK screen. In the fourth season of the crime series Murder on Shetland , he played Thomas Malone, a convicted murderer whose sentence is overturned after 23 years behind bars.

Although Stephen Walters has shown his comedic talent in his career, he seems to have a penchant for unpredictable, complex, and often dangerous characters.

In addition to acting, Stephen Walters also writes and directs his own short films. Together with fellow actor Andrew Gower , he produced a short film about the English singer Tommy Quickly (played by Gower), who was part of the Beatles' music scene in the 1960s . Humpty Fu * king Dumpty was funded in 2017 via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and is due to be published in 2019.

Stephen Walters is an avowed fan of the Beatles and Liverpool FC .
