action

Danny Meehan, the former captain of England's national soccer team, is drunk driving his car through town. When he attacks a police officer, Danny is sentenced to three years in prison. He is also accused of manipulating an important football match between England and Germany. Although this could not be proven to him, his active career seems to be over.

In prison, he meets the football fanatic director who wants to make Danny the coach of his team, which consists entirely of prison guards. Danny declines, but suggests a preparatory game between the team of guards and a team of prisoners. Danny is promoted to coach of the prisoner team and is now supposed to prepare the team for the game. After initial difficulties with the other prisoners, a friendly relationship develops between Danny and his new teammates.

One of the guards instigates a prisoner to kill Danny. A bomb is placed in his locker. After that, however, it is not Danny but the oldest prisoner who opens the locker and is killed. Eventually the game takes place with Danny playing as player- coach. In the first half of the game, Danny scored the 1-0 for the prisoners. At halftime, the director speaks alone to Danny in the team shower. Danny could be chalked up for the bombing and could face up to 20 years in prison if the prisoners win the game. So Danny gets into a quandary. On the one hand, he wants his protégés to win, on the other hand, if he wins, he risks the chance of early probation. Danny ultimately rebels against the pressure exerted on him and prepares the 3-2 winner for the prisoners.

Reviews

“Unbalanced mixture of football and prison film, which strikes socially critical comedy tones, while tending to brutal exaggerations in the game scenes. A film without any noteworthy logic that hardly demands any performance from the actors. "

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
