Murdoch Mysteries is a Canadian crime series that has been produced for the Canadian broadcaster Citytv since 2007 . It is based on the novel series Detective Murdoch by Maureen Jennings and is about the Canadian detective William Murdoch, who worked in Toronto , Ontario in the 1890s . She started in Canada on January 20, 2008 on Citytv.

In early March 2018, CBC extended the series for a twelfth season.

action

Murdoch Mysteries succeeds the police detective William Murdoch, who solves criminal cases in the Canadian city of Toronto in the 1890s using methods that were advanced at the time, including fingerprinting , surveillance , and blood tests . Since he is way ahead of his time, he keeps clashing with colleagues from other stations and above all with his direct superior, Inspector Brackenreid. In solving his cases, William is supported by doctor Julia Ogden and his inexperienced colleague Constable Crabtree.

characters

Detective William Murdoch
William is an intelligent, observant detective who uses techniques that are unusual for his time, such as blood tests and fingerprints. Born in Nova Scotia as the son of a fisherman, he was raised in a Jesuit- run orphanage after his mother's death , which means he speaks fluent French and is now a devout Catholic. For a long time William harbored a grudge against his father, whom he originally blamed for his mother's death and who left him to the Jesuits after his mother's death. Although William has a photographic memory and an enormous amount of knowledge, which he mainly acquired self-taught, he often finds it difficult to communicate emotionally with other people. Due to his unusual techniques and his impartial opinion, he often clashes with his boss, Inspector Brackenreid. From the second season he has a secret on / off relationship with Julia Ogden, which she makes public at the beginning of the third season. At the end of the third season, she ended the relationship again.
Inspector Thomas Brackenreid
Thomas is the chief of police station No. 4. In contrast to Det. Murdoch, Backenreid initially likes to carry out most of his interrogations through threats and violence. For him, quick results count more than thorough examinations and he often forms his judgment about suspects on the basis of social positions or personal impressions. He grew up in Yorkshire and served in the British Army before becoming a police officer, including fighting in Afghanistan . Now he and his wife have two sons, enjoy going to the theater and having a drink. Quickly excitable and persistent, with a sarcastic sense of humor, he is very good at traditional policing and proud of his job. He often disagrees with Williams' methods, but uses them at times when he thinks they deserve it.
Dr. Julia Ogden
Julia is a daughter from a wealthy family and a talented pathologist and undertaker . Her mother has already died and she has a strained relationship with her father, as she was one of the first women in Canada to study medicine against his will and is still single. She likes to conduct her autopsy accompanied by loud music. She suppresses the often unpleasant sides of her job with a somewhat macabre sense of humor. During her studies, she was caught swimming nude with some of her colleagues from the university and therefore already has a criminal record. From the second season she has a secret relationship with William Murdoch, which she makes public at the beginning of the third season. Julia knows about Williams' longing for a family of her own, but since she cannot have children through an illegal abortion, she confronts William with a fait accompli at the end of season three and leaves Toronto for a children's hospital in Buffalo . In Buffalo, she becomes engaged to a doctor at the children's hospital and returns to Toronto with her fiancé in season 4, where she resumes her old position.
Constable George Crabtree
George is William's inexperienced partner, but he often gives useful insights into cases and, under Det. Murdoch's guidance , does most of the forensic legwork, such as collecting evidence. He is eager and often utters random things that he thinks will help Murdoch solve the case, which they don't really do. He also frequently refers to his aunts, each of whom has been named after a variety of flowers. George's lively and sometimes a bit clumsy manner, as well as his inexhaustible imagination, are a wonderful contrast to Williams' somewhat stiff and serious personality and it always leads to inevitably funny situations. Georg Crabtree is played by Jonny Harris, who is actually a comedian, which one notices over and over again in the role of George.
