The White Queen is a historical and fictional British television series based on the three-part bestselling novel series The Queen of the White Rose , The Throne of the Red Queen and Thorn Sisters by Philippa Gregory . The series tells the dramatic battle for the Crown of England in the 15th century. It is a joint production by BBC One and the US TV station Starz . It was first broadcast in the UK on June 16, 2013 on BBC One. From a historical perspective, the series shows various inaccuracies.

action

In 1464 there has been a war for the succession to the throne in England for nine years between the two powerful noble houses York and Lancaster , whose family crests show a white rose (York) and a red rose (Lancaster). The House of York is headed by the young Edward IV of England , who is crowned King with the help of his powerful cousin Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick . Shortly afterwards he meets the young Elizabeth Woodville , whose family sympathizes with the Lancaster house. He falls in love, marries her and makes her his queen. This displeases Warwick, who wanted to marry Edward to a French princess and now sees his plans endangered.

Warwick therefore forges a new plan: he marries his daughter Isabel Neville to Edward's brother George, Duke of Clarence . He hopes that she will become queen as soon as George is in power and he can continue to exert influence. Warwick captures King Edward and has Elizabeth's father Richard Woodville and her brother John executed. To support her husband against his enemies and to take bloody revenge, Elizabeth and her mother Jacquetta Woodville use magical powers.

production

In September 2012, the American television station Starz ordered a 10-part season. The series was announced in collaboration with BBC One . The central leading roles were cast with Max Irons and Rebecca Ferguson . A budget of £ 25 million was available to realize the series. The film was shot on 120 days in and around Bruges . The decision was made in favor of Belgium because the backdrops in London could not be used sensibly due to the many cameras for road surveillance. The series was shot in two different versions: one for BBC One and one for Starz, which contains more extensive sex scenes. In addition, dialogues have been changed slightly for the Starz version, as the Americans are not as knowledgeable about British history as the British.

A documentary called The Real White Queen and Her Rivals was produced for the series and aired on June 17 and 24, 2013 on BBC Two .

Cast and dubbing

The German synchronization was carried out by Scalamedia GmbH in Berlin based on a dialogue book by Lutz Riedel , who also directed the dialogue.
