Isabella Neville

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Isabella Neville (born September 5, 1451 Warwick Castle, † December 22, 1476 ) was the eldest daughter of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick , the "kingmaker" of the Wars of the Roses , and Anne Beauchamp .

Life

Her birthplace was Warwick Castle . In 1469 she married George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence . Since the king was against this marriage, it took place on July 11th by a secret wedding in Calais. Through the marriage of the two, her husband entered into an alliance with Richard Neville , as well as with the House of Lancaster and the queen widow Margaret . A few months after the birth of her son on October 6, 1476, she died on December 22, 1476 at the age of only 25.

Since it was assumed that her servant Ankarette Twynho had poisoned her, she was hanged for this alleged crime. It is now believed that she died of either puerperal fever or tuberculosis. She was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire .
