A television series of the same name , based on the same series of novels, was shown back in the 1970s. The first broadcast took place on March 8, 2015 on BBC One . For the German-speaking countries, the secured Pay TV transmitter Sony Entertainment Television , the broadcasting rights. The broadcast is planned from July 26, 2016.

In April 2015, the BBC ordered a second season, which has been broadcast by BBC1 since September 4, 2016. On September 4, 2016, the broadcaster BBC extended the series by a third and fourth season. On June 10, 2018, the broadcaster BBC extended the series for a fifth and final season.

Starting point for the action

The series takes place in the late 18th century. After three years in the army, Ross Poldark returned to his native Cornwall from the American Revolutionary War in 1783 . There he learns that a lot has changed since he left. His father passed away leaving a huge mountain of debt and his great love Elizabeth is now engaged to his cousin. Despite all this, Ross Poldark wants to stay in Cornwall and get his country back on its feet. In the village he meets Demelza Carne, whom he hires as a kitchen assistant. However, this leads to conflicts within the village.

Background information

  • Poldark was filmed in Bristol, Bath and Cornwall in April 2014. However, the scenes at the Poldark family home were not filmed in Cornwall, but at Chavenage House in Gloucestershire.
  • The first season aired on BBC One on March 8, 2015. It is based on the first two books in the Poldark novel series by Winston Graham . The BBC also plans to film the remaining ten books. The second season was shot in the fall of 2015.
  • The BBC series is already the second television adaptation of the Poldark novels. The television series of the same name from the 1970s was shown on the BBC from 1975 to 1977. At that time, 15 million viewers tuned in to the series. The first episode of the new series saw seven million viewers. Because of this filming, a new tourism boom in Cornwall was expected.
  • Actor Robin Ellis played the role of Ross Poldark in the 1970s . Poldark stands in the series for fairness , is against injustice, questionable laws of the authorities and fights against them. Ellis can now be seen in the television series, Irony , as Judge Reverend Halse (season 1 episodes 3, 6; season 2 episodes 1, 5, 8; season 3 episode 2; as well as season 4 episode 6), who sentenced Jim Carter, Ross and others.
