Mockingbird Lane is an American television film by Bryan Singer from the year 2012 . Planned by Bryan Fuller as the pilot of a remake of the 1960s CBS series The Munsters , the horror comedy was shown on October 26, 2012 as a Halloween special on NBC . A continuation as a television series was rejected by the broadcaster in December 2012. It stars Jerry O'Connell , Portia de Rossi , Eddie Izzard , Mason Cook and Charity Wakefield .

action

The special describes the daily life of the benign Munster family. It consists of the couple Herman Munster (a Frankenstein monster / zombie) and Lily Munster (a vampire). Lily's father, (grandpa) is also a vampire. And live with them. Herman and Lily have a son, Eddie, who learns he's a werewolf during the course of the special, and their niece, Marylin, also lives with them. The origins of the Munster family are also shown.

background

The new edition was written and produced by Bryan Fuller and was announced as a one-hour drama with spectacular effects. In the pilot episode, the roots of the Munster are explored, the style of the episode being given a deliberately darker atmosphere without forgetting the humor. Major changes have been made to the costumes to make the protagonists appear "more human".

NBC confirmed in 2011 that they had commissioned a pilot episode for a remake of The Munsters. In January 2012 they announced that it would run under the title Mockingbird Lane , based on the address of the original Munster family, who also lived on Mockingbird Lane 1313.

On October 11, 2012, NBC announced that the Mockingbird Lane pilot would air on October 26, 2014 in the form of a Halloween special. The special was seen by 5.47 million viewers and achieved a target group rating of 1.5 percent.

NBC director Robert Greenblatt's statement on the decision not to include Mockingbird Lane as a series: “We decided that the cohesion was not good enough to make it a series. It looked original and imaginative, but in the end it wasn't convincing. We loved the cast, but we didn't just want a sitcom. It should fill 60 minutes in order to get more drama than 30 minutes. It's hard to weigh exactly how strange vs. supernatural vs. Family drama should be. I think we didn't get the perfect mix. "

characters

  • Jerry O'Connell as Herman Munster, made from other people's body parts. In contrast to the original series, Herman's appearance can hardly be distinguished from a normal person, apart from the obvious scars. He is a very intelligent man with a sensitive heart.
  • Portia de Rossi as Lily Munster, the elegant matriarch of the family. A vampire like her father does not have the typical blood drinker's cravings.
  • Charity Wakefield as Marilyn Munster, Lily's niece. The young woman, seen as an unsightly member of the family, has a dark secret with her. Her mother tried to eat her, but Grandpa D. prevented it.
  • Mason Cook as Eddie Munster, is Lily and Herman's son. An ordinary boy who knows nothing about the slumbering werewolf in him. When his parents were forced to reveal this news to him, they got him a pet dragon to help him during his transformation.
  • Eddie Izzard as Grandpa Munster. Lily's father - an ancient vampire of noble sex - who likes to see himself as the head of the family. In this version a much darker character than its 1960 counterpart, his passion for hunting and killing people seems strong.

Guest roles

  • Cheyenne Jackson as Steve. The widowed leader of the Boy Scout group in which Eddie is active becomes part of Grandpa's plan to drink his blood and use the man's heart as a replacement for Herman's damaged heart.
  • Beth Grant as Marie, the Munster's curious neighbor.
  • John Kassir as Tim, Marie's husband.

reception

At screenrant.com, Kevin Yeoman says “Mockingbird Lane is not a slavish reproduction of the 1960s sitcom,” but “just a glimpse into a horror meets fantasy world brought to life by the rather fertile fantasy of Bryan Fuller becomes. While there are many clever setbacks to the original series [...] the pilot doesn't shy away from showing off the more monstrous (albeit family-friendly) aspects of every Munster family member [...]. But in that particular way, Fuller is all cute and charming. "
