The Wandering Earth (Original title: Liúlàng Dìqiú ) is a Chinese science fiction film from 2019. Directed by Frant Gwo . It is a film adaptation of the short story The Wandering Earth (2000) by Liu Cixin . The film opened in Chinese cinemas on February 5, 2019. Netflix secured the worldwide streaming rights to the film and has made it available for download since April 30, 2019.

The sun is threatening to go out and is about to become a red giant . When that happens, it spreads beyond Mars . So people plan to pull the earth out of orbit with the help of huge rocket engines, up to the star Proxima Centauri .

The plot begins with the life of a boy who was born when humans stopped the Earth's rotation and follows his life as he prepares to leave the solar system in order to find a new home star in the vastness of space as quickly as possible. For this purpose, large cities are being built below the earth's surface .

The film was produced by the China Film Group Corporation , which also wrote Warcraft: The Beginning (2016) and The Great Wall (2016).

reception

Before the Chinese New Year premiere on February 5, 2019, the film was screened in front of scientists and engineers in Beijing . The Astronaut Chen Dong said he was thrilled. At the screening, director Frant Gwo said that if the film hits the box office, there will be a successor. The wandering earth is described as the largest science fiction film production in China to date .

The film was very successful in the cinemas. In the first nine days, China grossed 2.64 billion yuan (around 346.3 million euros), making Wandering Earth one of the most successful films in China.
