Chen Dong ( Chinese  陳冬  /  陈冬 , Pinyin Chén Dōng ; born December 12, 1978 in Luoyang , Henan , China ) is a Chinese military pilot and spaceman .

Chen joined the Air Force of the People's Republic of China in August 1997 and the CCP in April 1999 . He has over 1500 flight hours as a fighter pilot and achieved the rank of Colonel. Chen is a graduate engineer and graduate from Jiaotong University in Xi'an .

As a fighter pilot, Chen belonged to the second group of Chinese Taikonauts in 2009 . Yang Liwei , the first spaceman in China, conducted the selection interview with him. In March 2010, he was officially selected as a taikonaut for the Shenzhou 11 space program.

Together with Commander Jing Haipeng , Chen started his first space mission on October 16, 2016 at 11.30 p.m. GMT (October 17, 7.30 a.m. local time) at the Jiuquan Cosmodrome in China with the Long March 2F launcher in the Shenzhou 11 spacecraft. The two space travelers lived and worked aboard the Tiangong 2 space station for about 30 days and returned to Earth on November 18, 2016.

Private life

Chen comes from a working-class family consisting of his father Chén Shùlín ( 陳樹林  /  陈树林 ), his mother Huáng Yàn ( 黃 焱  /  黄 焱 ) and his four years older brother Chén Bō ( 陳波  /  陈波 ), one in Dongguan working doctor. Chen is married and has two sons who are twins . His wife is from Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province , where he was stationed as a fighter pilot for a while.

Award

For his services to the Shenzhou 11 Mission, on December 26, 2016, Chen was awarded the Third Class Space Medal by China's highest military command, the Central Military Commission .
