The Jiaotong University Xi'an , short: JUX , ( Chinese  西安 交通 大学 , Pinyin Xī'ān Jiāotōng Dàxué , English Xi'an Jiaotong University , short: XJTU ) is a Chinese university founded in 1896 in Xi'an in Shaanxi Province . The name “Jiaotong” ( 交通 , jiāotōng , Chiaotung ) has in Chinese both the meaning of “traffic” and “transport” as well as “communication” and “connection”.

Jiaotong University Xi'an is a member of the C9 League , the Chinese equivalent of the American Ivy League . The C9 League was founded in 2009 and brings together the nine most prestigious universities in China.

history

Sheng Xuanhuai ( 盛宣怀 , Shèng Xuānhuái , 1844-1916), the transport minister of the Qing dynasty , founded the "Nanyang Public School" ( 南洋 公 学 , Nányáng Gōngxué ) in Shanghai in 1896 , from which the Jiaotong University later emerged. Jiaotong University was one of the best universities in the Republic of China (1912-1949) .

After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the then central government decided in 1956, under the leadership of Prime Minister Zhou Enlai , to relocate Jiaotong University to Xi'an. This was intended to promote education and industrial development in the western regions. The move began in 1956, despite controversial discussions. By the end of 1957, 65% of the faculties and faculty and over 60% of the students had arrived in Xi'an. In 1957, after extensive investigation and argument, the central government decided to split Jiaotong University . The part that had already moved founded a completely independent university in Xi'an and the part that remained in Shanghai was to develop further there. It is known today as Shanghai Jiaotong University .

Campuses

Xingqing Campus

JUX has three campuses, all of which are located in downtown Xi'an.

Xingqing

The Xingqing Campus ( 兴庆 校区 , Xīngqìng Xiàoqū ) is the main campus of the JUX. It is named after the Xingqing Palace ( 兴庆宫 , Xīngqìng Gōng ) of the Tang Dynasty , which once stood here.

Yanta

The Yanta Campus ( 雁塔 校区 , Yàntǎ Xiàoqū ) is the campus of the Medical Faculty and the Faculty of Economics and Finance. The campus is called “Yanta” because it is located near the Great Wild Goose Pagoda ( Dà Yàntǎ ).

Qujiang

On the Qujiang campus ( 曲江 校区 , Qǔjiāng Xiàoqū ) there are some research centers, such as B. the "Front Institute for Scientific and Technical Research", short: FWTF, ( 前沿 科学 技术 研究院 , English FIST ).

International cooperation

On 23 May 2006, the Xi'an Jiaotong University, founded in partnership with the University of Liverpool in Suzhou , in the province of Jiangsu of the People's Republic of China , the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University , in short XJTLU. It is a science and engineering university with an additional focus on English. The language of instruction is English and most faculties have a high proportion of international professors. Students receive both a degree from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and a degree from the University of Liverpool.

Faculties

The JUX is divided into 19 so-called "academies" (学院). In addition, there is the aforementioned FWTF, the “Jinhe Economic Research Center” (金禾 经济 研究 中心), the “Academy for Sustainable Development” (可持续 发展 学院), the “Academy for Dramaturgy” (戏剧 学院) and the “International Academy for pedagogy ”(国际 教育 学院).

According to the QS World University Rankings , JUX is consistently one of the ten best universities in the People's Republic of China. It is the highest rated university in western China.
