founding

The University of Liverpool and Jiaotong University Xi'an signed a cooperation agreement on September 28, 2004 to establish a new university independent of the two founders. A natural science and engineering university with an additional focus on English was to be created. The university is constituted as a private university owned by the University of Liverpool and Jiaotong University Xi'an.

The name Jiaotong or Jiao Tong is the transcription of the Chinese word 交通 (pinyin: Jiāotōng; Wade-Giles: Chiaotung). This word roughly means traffic, transport or communication (something that connects) and is part of Chinese university names in several cases, in which it usually remains untranslated.

Construction began in August 2005. Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University officially opened on May 29, 2006. It is the first partnership between high-ranking Chinese and British research universities and is recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a non-profit educational institution.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the university combines design elements of the coat of arms of the University of Liverpool (e.g. outline, blue and white coloring, three liver birds (stylized birds with a leaf in their beak, heraldic animal of the city of Liverpool)) with elements of the coat of arms of the Jiaotong -Xi'an University (anvil, hammer, books, gear). The inscription reads: XJTLU 2006.

campus

The campus is located about 12 km southeast of the historic city center of Suzhou, on the eastern edge of the Gusu district in Dushu Lake High Education Town (HET), which in turn is part of the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). The campus is about 90 km west of Shanghai , 230 km east of Nanjing and 160 km north of Hangzhou , the capital of Zhejiang Province.

The master plan for the north campus (between Ren'ai and Wenjingstrasse) and some of the institute buildings was designed by the American architecture firm Perkins + Will and completed by 2012. The British-Asian architecture firm Aedas designed the Administration and Information Center , which houses parts of the university administration and the university library, and was completed in August 2013. The cube-shaped structure lies on a canal that forms the western border of the campus. In contrast to many other universities in southern China , the buildings are air-conditioned all year round.

On the south campus (between Wenjing and Yifang streets) there are sports facilities and further institute buildings are planned and under construction, which should be ready for occupancy by 2016. The north and south campuses are separated by Wenjing Street and the canal that runs along the street. They are connected by a mall that runs under the street and canal. On the north campus, the mall expands to a sunken courtyard that houses the university's Student Enterprise Park . On the south campus, the mall leads to the central plaza of the campus.
