Power Rangers is an American television series by Haim Saban and an adaptation of the Japanese Super Sentai series, which belongs to the Tokusatsu genre and has been produced by Fox Television from 1993 , then by Disney and since 2011 for Nickelodeon . There are now 26 seasons and three films. The success of the series also resulted in an extensive merchandise market for children's toys. Among other things, images of the Rangers and their Zords were sold for each of the squadrons.

The Power Rangers are a group of people (mostly teenagers) who protect the world from evil . They usually have five members and each member can slip into a battle suit (morph) to keep his identity secret and to have more strength. They use various weapons and so-called zords, giant combat robots, to fight their enemies. To tell them apart, each ranger has a combat suit in a certain color. These are mostly red, blue, black, yellow, green and pink. Each ranger has a special weapon and a special zord. This weapon is mostly improved or upgraded over the course of the series.

The seasons, which are independent in terms of content, always follow a similar pattern: A major villain wants to destroy or conquer the earth or all people. The Power Rangers are chosen to fight him. The enemy sends all sorts of monsters to fight the Rangers. These are soon superior to the monster; then it enlarges. The Rangers call their Zords and together they can defeat the monster. Often a further, sixth, ranger is added during the current season. He often has different plans and goals than the Rangers or is sometimes completely angry, but most of the time he joins the group.

In the first few seasons, there was an ongoing storyline from season to season. The same people received a new power over and over again. This concept was abandoned from the sixth season. However, since then there have been guest appearances by old Rangers and also in almost every season a double episode in which the Rangers from the current and last season fight together. In the tenth season, all red Rangers from previous seasons came together for the anniversary.

Production background

Haim Saban wanted to import the Japanese series Super Sentai to the USA. However, nobody could identify with the Japanese stories, traditions and values. For this reason, a completely new series was developed, the Japanese actors were replaced by American actors and the series was given a whole new story. The monsters and scenes in combat suits and combat robots were adopted from the Japanese original.

The series has been running since 1993 and has gone through many changes since then. An episode lasts about 20 minutes, but in Germany these are often only about 17 to 20 minutes long.

In 1995, Power Rangers - The Film was a feature film. Two years later, another film followed with Turbo: The Power Rangers Film.

2015 staged Joseph Kahn with Power / Rangers a short film, which sees itself as a tribute and fan film of the franchise, but not affiliated with the official Power Rangers is. Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der Beek can be seen in leading roles . Haim Saban tried to prevent the film from spreading as it is a more adult version compared to the official franchise, with significantly more brutal action.

Another official Power Rangers film was released in 2017 . The official cinema release in the USA was March 24, 2017. In Germany, the screen reboot was shown a day earlier.

On May 1st, 2018 it was announced that Hasbro would take over the entire Power Rangers brand for ~ 500 million US $ and would like to create more films in the Power Rangers universe. Haim Saban will continue to act as a consultant.

Two new comic series have been announced for November 2020.

In the United States, the series first ran on Fox Kids , after being taken over by Disney on ABC Family and Toon Disney . Nickelodeon has been showing new episodes since 2011 .

In Germany, the series ran at the beginning of the Saturday morning program from 9 to 11 pm from RTL . Then it was broadcast even earlier. In the meantime she could be seen on Super RTL . On pay TV, the series initially ran on Jetix , after which it was discontinued on Disney XD . Seasons 18 to 22 premiered on Nickelodeon Germany . The entire 23rd season ( Dino Super Charge ) was released on June 30, 2017 on the streaming platform Netflix , a new dubbing cast was chosen and not the same as in Dino Charge .
