Power Rangers is a 2017 American superhero film, directed by Dean Israelite , and written by John Gatins . In Germany, the film was released in cinemas on March 23, 2017. The film sees itself as a reboot of the television series of the same name and is loosely based on its first season Mighty Morphin Power Rangers .

action

The film begins 65 million years before our time. The Power Rangers were once mighty warriors who fought for good and protected life and the Zeo crystal. But the green ranger, Rita Repulsa, got angry and now plans to use the Zeo crystal to seize power over the universe. The red ranger Zordon survived their attack and sent five colored power coins in the hope that they would one day choose new rangers. He orders his robot assistant Alpha 5 to cause a meteor strike that wipes out him and the dinosaurs and sends Rita to the bottom of the sea, frustrating her plan.

In this day and age, Jason Scott is a well-known football star in the fictional town of Angel Grove. After an incident, he is released from the team and has to be detained at the local high school, which he is now going to. He meets the autistic Billy Cranston and the beautiful Kimberly Hart, who loses her friends and cuts her hair after an incident in which she beats a student. Jason and Billy get along well and after school they go to a mine where Jason meets Kimberly. They also meet two other classmates there, Trini Kwan and Zack Taylor. The five teenagers discover the power coins and Jason takes the red, Billy the blue, Trini the yellow, Zack the black and Kimberly the pink. After a chase with the guards, at the end of which their car is hit by a train, which they survive, they all discover the next day that they have been given superpowers. They are very strong and can jump very far. Kimberly feels like they have to go back to where they found the coins. Once there, they jump over a crevice. After Billy falls in, the others jump after and discover Zordon's spaceship, where they meet the Alpha 5 robot. Alpha 5 has transferred Zordon's consciousness out of his body and this now appears as a large face on a wall. He tells them about the Power Rangers and Rita Repulsa and tells the teenagers that they have to become Power Rangers themselves because they were chosen by the Power Coins. They can transform themselves with the help of the morphine grid, from which the power of the coins comes. They cannot transform yet. The teenagers now have to undergo what usually takes years: training for what to expect. Time is of the essence because Rita has woken up after she was fished out of the sea by Jason's father and his fellow fishermen. Rita gets gold from a jeweler, which she needs to create the giant monster Goldar. With its help, she wants to get to the piece of Zeo crystal on earth, with the Zeo crystal gain power over the universe and extinguish all life. For the next time the teenagers train under the instructions of Zordon and Alpha 5 with holograms of Rita's monsters. However, Zordon soon despairs of them as they do very poorly. Finally, he and Alpha 5 show the teenagers their Zords, giant dinosaur-like robots that are supposed to help the Rangers fight against large opponents. Jason is supposed to lead the team as the red ranger. Since Zordon is very desperate in view of the situation, he decides to transfer his consciousness back into his body in order to be the red ranger himself again. Finally, Billy suddenly turns into the blue ranger for a short time when he stops Jason and Zack from a fight, but doesn't know how it happened. Zordon fires the team. Jason returns to the spaceship and accuses Zordon of using the team for his own benefit. Outside, Jason, Billy, Kimberly, Trini and Zack are talking and getting closer.

Late at night, Rita Repulsa ambushes Trini and orders her to meet the others by text message at the port. When everyone is there, they are overwhelmed by Rita, who asks Billy, who has found the whereabouts of the Zeo-Crystal, to find out where it is. Then she kills him. The others take Billy to Zordon. He goes to the morphine grid, with which he can put his project into practice. But instead, Zordon realizes that he was wrong and brings Billy back to life. Although he can no longer return to his body, there can only be one red ranger and this should be Jason. After this event, the five teenagers can finally transform themselves as they are finally really a team. As Power Rangers, they set out to stop Rita, who has since created Goldar. The Rangers overpower Rita's group of monsters and pursue them and Goldar with the Zords to Angel Grove, where Goldar wreaks havoc. The Power Rangers take up the fight against Goldar with their Zords and Jason saves his father's life. Eventually, Goldar begins to expose the piece of Zeo crystal. The Rangers defend this with all their might, but Goldar wins the upper hand and the Rangers fall with their Zords into the crack with the crystal piece. Then, however, the Zords merge into a single gigantic Zord, the Megazord. With their Megazord, the Rangers finally manage to defeat Goldar. Rita tells them there is more to come and jumps towards the Megazord, but the Rangers knock her away with its hand and Rita is thrown into space and freezes there. The Power Rangers are hailed as heroes and are returning to their normal lives. Zordon is grateful to them.

A mid-credit scene shows a student named Tommy Oliver being called during detention, but only his green jacket can be seen. Eventually Billy's locker explodes.

background

The film was announced in March 2014 by rights holder Saban Brands and Lionsgate film studio . The release date was originally supposed to be July 22, 2016, but was eventually moved to March 23, 2017. Roberto Orci had been hired as a director, but had to resign because of the work on Star Trek Beyond . Instead, Dean Israelite took over the position of director.

Actors Amy Jo Johnson and Jason David Frank made a cameo in the film. After the final fight, they can be seen in the midst of the other citizens of Angel Grove, pulling out their smartphones and photographing the megazord. Amy Jo Johnson played in the original series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993-1996) the Pink Ranger Kimberly Hart, Jason David Frank played at the same time in the series Tommy Oliver, the green and later white Power Ranger. In the season Dino Thunder he was also seen as a black ranger. Johnson and Frank are the only actors to appear in all three Power Rangers films ( 1995 , 1997 , 2017).

Some scenes from the first, longer trailer didn't make it into the final film. The scene in which Kimberly and Jason kiss is missing, as is the scene in which another ranger (probably Zack) is training on a moving freight train.

At the beginning of the film, in the Cenozoic , Rita Repulsa is shown briefly as the green power ranger before she sinks into the sea with her power coin. Later in the film, Rita carries the power coin with her as the central element of her wand. In the end credits of the film, a “new detainee” in the school is introduced and called in a post-credit scene. The student himself cannot be seen, however, only his green jacket hangs on his chair. The name of the called student is Tommy Oliver, who became the green Power Ranger in the original series.

It is noticeable that the Zords, the mechanical animal robots of the Rangers, are significantly smaller in the film than in the series or in earlier films. While the red ranger's Tyrannosaurus Rex-Zord was the size of a skyscraper in the original series, the largest single zord in the film is, at best, as big as a multi-story house and no wider than the main street of the city.

criticism

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film has a rating of 43% with an average rating of 5 out of 10 points (as of March 2017).

At trailerwatch.de, the significantly stronger focus on the story of the main characters is rated positively, while the film has to be chalked up with weaknesses in storytelling. All in all, you get what you expect: Popcorn cinema based on the principle of "head off - film on".

music

The music for the film was composed by Brian Tyler . Furthermore, the song Legendary by Welshly Arms is used as the theme music .

Trivia

  • The cast of the then series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers , Jason David Frank (Tommy Oliver (Green Ranger)) and Amy Jo Johnson (Kimberly Hart (Pinker Ranger)) have a joint cameo
  • When the Zords march together in formation for the first time, Go Go Power Rangers from Power Rangers - The Film can be heard for a short time .
  • Billy is autistic , which is represented by clichéd autistic behavior (loner, order stick, doesn't understand sarcasm).
  • The scene in the café where Kim and Trini fight for the last piece of cake with their forks pays homage to Po's "final exam" in Kung Fu Panda .
  • When Jason's father is looking for his son, he mentions the intersection of Mariner Bay and Reefside. In the television series, these were the names of the cities where the seasons Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue (Mariner Bay) and Power Rangers Dino Thunder (Reefside) play.
  • In one scene, Trini wears a T-shirt with the year 1973 - the year of birth of actress Thuy Trang , who died in 2001 and who played Trini in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers .

future

According to producer and series creator Haim Saban, there is already a story arc for six films. This corresponds to an earlier statement that six to seven films are possible.
