Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ( broadcast as Power Rangers in the German version ) is an American TV series inspired by the Japanese Sentai genre with 155 episodes in 3 seasons, which was broadcast between 1993 and 1996. The series was designed by Haim Saban and Shuki Levi and produced by Fox Television . Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (including the Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers sub-season ) is the first generation of the Power Rangers franchise.

History and background

In 1992, Haim Saban and Shuki Levy wanted to bring the Japanese Tokusatsu television series Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger to US television. But since there are big differences between the Japanese and the American culture, it was decided not to dub the series. Instead, the action scenes from "Zyuranger" were used, own US actors were cast and a new story developed. The first result was "Dino Rangers". When the first pilot episode was presented on television (now known as the "Lost Episode"), it was refused to broadcast. The project was shut down for the time being, but Haim Saban and Shuki Levy did not want to give up and in 1993 produced a second, much more professional version and named it "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers". The second pilot episode "The Witch's Return" was a success and the FoxKids broadcaster committed to produce 40 more episodes. One possible reason for the success was the film Jurassic Park , which triggered a true dinosaur boom that same year and helped the series, which offered the same theme, to a success. Due to the surprising success, 20 more episodes were produced for the first season in order to be able to prepare for the second season.

The Japanese series "Gosei Sentai Dairanger" from 1993 served as a template for the second season . The only thing that was not adopted is the costumes, with the exception of the white ranger. The ranger suits used are still from the Zyuranger. There is also no main villain Lord Zedd in the Sentai version. He is the first major villain produced exclusively for America. For this reason, Rita's face is often covered in the first episodes of the second season, as it should not be recognized that Rita was already being played by an American actress at this point. Officially, this was only explained from the three-part series "Rita's Revenge" onwards, with the fact that Rita was making a makeover.

The Japanese series "Ninja Sentai Kakuranger" from 1994 served as a template for the third season . The Power Rangers suits still come from the Zyuranger, as well as the white Ranger from the Dairanger. The correct "Kakuranger" costumes are only used from the "Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers" sub-season . The main opponents in the Sentai original are the role models of Rito Revolto and the master of terror.

From Power Rangers Zeo the addition "Mighty Morphin" (German: mighty transformation) was dropped. For this reason, the first 155 episodes of the Power Rangers series are referred to as "Mighty Morphin" or "MMPR".

action

First season

The series is set in the fictional city of Angel Grove, which is located in California. On a lunar expedition, two astronauts discover a container in which the space witch Rita Repulsa and her lackeys were locked up over 10,000 years ago. When the witch discovers the next planet (earth), she quickly decides to conquer it and take revenge on Zordon, who had locked her up. On earth, Zordon, a disembodied being trapped in a time trap, is alerted by Rita's attack. Due to the imminent danger, he is forced to recruit five sincere and brave youngsters and give them the strength to fight the witch and her army. Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini and Billy are chosen by Zordon and receive the Power Coins from him , which give the young people the power to transform themselves into the Power Rangers. In addition, the Power Rangers are assigned Zords - giant mechanical robots that the Rangers can summon when their opponents are enlarged. Jason gets the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord, Kimberly the Flugsaurus Dinozord, Zack the Mammut Dinozord, Trini the saber-toothed tiger Dinozord and Billy the Triceratops Dinozord. All five dinozords can combine to form a powerful megazord.

The Power Rangers manage to repel Rita's monster again and again until she finally summons her own ranger. Since Rita had another Power Coin in her hands from the beginning, she gives it to Tommy. As a green ranger, Tommy fights the other Power Rangers and almost manages to destroy the command center and the dinozords. After his sword of darkness and thus Rita's spell has been broken, Tommy changes sides and fights the space witch together with the other Power Rangers. He gives the Power Rangers additional support from the Dragonzord. A little later, Tommy and Jason discover the Zord Titanus on a mission, with which the other Dinozords can finally form the mighty Ultrazord.

Second season

After Rita Repulsa fails in the fight against the Power Rangers, her master Lord Zedd returns and banishes them back to the space container. The Power Rangers cannot fight Lord Zedd's monsters with their Dinozords, so Zordon transforms them into the stronger Thunderzords. After Tommy lost his green ranger power through Lord Zedd, Zordon and Alpha 5 create the white Tigerzord and thus the white ranger (also Tommy), who becomes the leader of the group. Jason, Zack and Trini leave the Power Rangers because they were selected for a peace conference in Switzerland and are then replaced by Rocky, Adam and Aisha.

Third season

After Lord Zedd could not defeat the Power Rangers either, Rita's brother Rito Revolto appears and destroys the Power Rangers' Donnerzords. With that, the Power Rangers have lost their transformative powers. Zordon sends them to Ninjor, who gives them the new ninja power. The Power Rangers now have ninja suits against the Tengu warriors and ranger suits that are similar to their old ones. The new ninja power also includes the ninjazords, with which Rito, Rita and Lord Zedd can be pushed back. Finster later manages to locate old Zords. Lord Zedd wants to use them as pilots with the Power Rangers, but the Zords switch to the Power Rangers' side and are used as Shogunzords. When Katherine comes to the town of Angel Grove, Rita influences her with a spell against the Power Rangers and takes the Falkenzord and Ninjor prisoner. When Katherine is freed from the spell, Kimberly gives her her Pink Ranger Power because she has decided to take part in the World Gymnastics Festival. To make matters worse, Rita and Rito's father, the master of horror, who wants to get the Zeo-Crystal with the help of ninja, appear. The Power Rangers prefer to destroy the crystal rather than leave it to him and disperse the fragments in different places in different time periods. The master of horror takes revenge by turning the earth backwards so that time turns backwards, thus transforming the Power Rangers back into their childhood.

Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers (Third Season)

The Alien Rangers (also known as Aquitar Rangers) come from the planet Aquitar and stood in for the Power Rangers after they were turned into children by the Master of Terror. After they were able to drive away the master of horror and the children have restored the Zeo crystal and thus normal time, the Alien Rangers retreat back to their planet. In the meantime, Rito and Goldar arrive at the Zordon command center and detonate a bomb. They manage to steal the Zeo crystal and destroy the command center. The action continues in the next season series Power Rangers Zeo.

In return, Rita was locked in a space barrel. Zordon knew that Rita would eventually manage to free herself and therefore set up a command center outside Angel Grove, where he and his assistant Alpha 5 watch over the earth. When Rita was freed, he selects "five brave and brave human children" to defend the earth as Power Rangers. Since then he has acted as a mentor to the Power Rangers and supports them with his wisdom.

Ninjor introduces them to the art and wisdom of the ninjas and gives them the new Power Coins (Ninja Power) and Ninjazords. He supports the Power Rangers in the fight against Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa. He can also enlarge and change his battle formation. He becomes a lot stronger.

rogue

Rita Repulsa

Rita Repulsa ( Machiko Soga [Japanese original actors ], Carla Perez [US actress] and Barbara Goodson [voice]) is a witch from the depths of space who wants to conquer the earth. She was banished to a space container by Zordon 10,000 years ago. However, a few astronauts accidentally open this barrel, releasing Rita and her entourage. Rita's plans to conquer the earth, however, are thwarted again and again by the Power Rangers. After all of her plans fail, Rita's master, Lord Zedd, returns and is upset about her failure. He puts them back in the bin. After Lord Zedd's attempts to conquer the earth were doomed to failure, he had to regenerate his evil energy in a long sleep. Rita took this opportunity to return to the Moon Palace. She ordered Finster to brew her a love potion. She gave this to Lord Zedd during his sleep. After waking up, he became obsessed with Rita and married her. After the arrival of her brother Rito, Rita often allied herself with him against Goldar, as he had betrayed her when Lord Zedd arrived. Together with Lord Zedd, Rita finally manages to destroy the Rangers' Power Coins.

Lord Zedd

Lord Zedd ( Ed Neil [US actor] and Robert Axelrod [voice]) is Rita's boss and later husband. He appears for the first time in the second season to bring Rita's mission to conquer the earth to an end. In his first attack on the Power Rangers, he succeeds in freezing the Dinozords and incapacitating the Rangers. However, Zordon creates the new Donnerzords from the old Zords, which can stand up to Zedd's magic. While Zedd has to sleep deeply to recover, Rita returns and gives him a love potion. Zedd becomes obsessed with Rita and eventually marries her. Goldar later tells him that his love for Rita was based only on a love potion. But now he loves Rita in his own way. He does not have a good opinion of Rita's family, that is, of her brother Rito Revolto and her father, the master of terror. After returning to the galaxy M51, the Master of Terror resumes his own plans to conquer Earth. Together with Rita he can destroy the Power Coins of the Rangers.

Goldar

Goldar ( Kerrigan Mahan ) is Rita's elite warrior. Together with her he was locked in the space barrel for 10,000 years. Goldar has always been completely loyal to Rita, but when Lord Zedd returns, he immediately takes his side and denies his former queen. For his loyalty to Lord Zedd, he restores his wings, which were taken from him long ago. Unlike Rita, Lord Zedd no longer uses Goldar for direct attacks. After Rita returns and Lord Zedd desires her thanks to her love potion, he tries to save his master from her bad influence, but is rejected. He is also suspicious of Rita's brother Rito Revolto, but both are always seen together later and seem to become something of friends over time. Together with him he is given the task of installing an explosive device under the vault of the command center and stealing the Zeocrystal. However, you detonate the explosive device too early and are surprised by the rapid explosion.

Rito Revolto

Rito Revolto ( Bob Papenbrook ) is a living skeleton and the younger brother of Rita. Rito first appears at the beginning of the third season. He lands on the moon to bring his sister and Lord Zedd a wedding present. Among other things, he gives them the Tengu warriors, who hatch in eggs on the surface of the moon and replace the monster patrol. Together with a group of monsters, he succeeds in destroying the Donnerzords. However, after Ninjor's Power Rangers get the Ninja Power and Ninjazords, they can defeat him, and he takes a back seat, just like Goldar. Together with Goldar, Rito goes to the catacombs under the command center to blow it up. However, you detonate the explosive device too early. Nevertheless, they still manage to steal the Zeocrystal before the explosive device detonates. However, they no longer escape the explosion in time, they lose the Zeocrystal and their memory.

Master of Terror

The Master of Terror ( Tom Wyner ) is the father of Rita Repulsa and Rito Revolto. The master of horror visits his daughter Rita in the moon palace to put his plan to bring the Zeo crystal into his power. After his own monsters also failed in the fight against the Power Rangers, he changed the course of time and thus turned the Power Rangers back into children. However, Zordon calls the Alien Rangers from the planet Aquitar for help. Since he cannot defeat the Power Rangers despite all his attempts and he does not get the Zeo crystal, he returns to his own galaxy in frustration.

Scorpina

Scorpina ( Ami Kawai , Sabrina Lu and Wendee Lee ) is one of Rita's servants. Rita calls Scorpina out of her 10,000 years of sleep so that she and the green ranger destroy the Power Rangers. She can also transform into a giant scorpion monster.

Dark

Finster ( Robert Axelrod ) was freed from the space barrel together with Rita. In the moon palace he then creates the monster patrol and many other monsters for Rita. After Lord Zedd has taken over the Moon Palace, there is no longer any task for him, as Lord Zedd creates his monsters himself.
