action

The film seamlessly continues the plot from the end of its predecessor Breaking Dawn - Until (s) the end of the night - Part 1 . On her first hunt, the newborn vampire Bella demonstrates an unusual ability to control herself by choosing a puma over a slightly injured mountaineer. Then she meets Jacob, who has imprinted on her daughter Renesmée, which Bella does not yet know. When she sees her daughter Renesmée for the first time, she learns that she is growing unusually quickly and has the special gift of communicating with people through touch and thus revealing her thoughts. When Jacob admits to Bella that it was imprinted on her daughter, a heated argument ensues between the two. However, they get along again shortly afterwards.

The Cullens give Bella and Edward their own secluded house in the woods, where they live with their daughter from now on. However, the family is increasingly worried about Renesmée's rapid development, as they fear that the child itself will expect a life that is far too short compared to humans.

Since the Cullens plan to trick Bella's father into believing that Bella died and then left Forks, Jacob shares his secret with Charlie by transforming himself into a wolf in his presence. Jacob tells Charlie that Bella is fine but that she has "changed". During Charlie's subsequent visit, Bella leaves him in the dark about her real nature and Renesmée's origin and asks him to ask as few questions as possible. In return, they would stay in Forks.

When Bella is out and about in the snowy mountains with Renesmée and Jacob, they are watched by Irina, a member of the Denali clan. Shortly thereafter, Alice receives a vision in which the Volturi come to Forks to destroy the Cullens. When Irina saw Bella with Renesmée a few days earlier, she mistakenly mistook the girl for a child who had been transformed by a bite and thus represented a danger to the vampire world due to its indomitable nature. In the meantime she had traveled to Volterra to tell the Volturi about this alleged crime of the Cullens. The Cullens see the search for allies as the only chance to avert a fight, who should testify to Renesmée's uniqueness. If they can prove that no law has been broken, the Volturi must sit back and leave to maintain their status as the guardians of law and order in the vampire world. When they are about to go looking for witnesses, the Cullens discover that Alice and Jasper have secretly escaped. They just leave a brief note of the time of the Volturi's arrival.

Soon more and more Witnesses from all over the world are arriving in Forks. Due to Renesmée's unusual talent and Edward's powers of persuasion, most of them are ultimately ready not only to testify, but also to fight the Volturi if necessary. The wolves are also ready to fight on the side of the Cullens. The approaching danger activates the wolf gene in many other Quileute, so that the packs meanwhile grow steadily.

Meanwhile, Bella learns of her own special ability: She has an invisible protective shield that protects her from the supernatural abilities of other vampires. As a result, Edward and any other vampire who had mental abilities were unable to use them against them. In order to increase her chances in the upcoming fight, Bella wants to improve her ability by expanding her protective shield and protecting others from mental attacks, which she succeeds after several attempts. Bella also investigates a hidden clue from Alice and meets a man named J. Jenks, who hands her an envelope containing fake IDs and birth certificates for Jacob and Renesmée. Bella is sad to note that the escape route is only prepared for Jacob and Renesmée.

As Alice anticipated, the Volturi arrive in Forks. The clans stand ready to fight in a snow-covered clearing. First of all, everything goes according to plan: Evidence that Irina's indictment was unfounded is produced. Irina also once again admits that the Cullens are innocent and is executed for her false accusations. However, Aro does not see the matter as closed: Since one cannot foresee how Renesmée will develop in the future, in his opinion any risk must be ruled out. When the Volturi and her guards begin to attack with the help of their powers, Bella is able to repel them with her protective shield.

The beginning attack is stopped by the surprising return of Alice and Jasper. Alice wants to convince Aro with a vision that Renesmée will not pose a threat to the vampire secret at any time. However, she is horrified to find that Aro will not deviate from his plan to destroy the Cullens despite the vision. Alice then signals to Bella to bring Renesmée to safety and attacks Aro, while Jacob flees with Renesmée. Aro orders his subjects to take Alice away. When Carlisle rushes to her aid, he is attacked by Aro, killed and burned in front of his family and friends. In angry desperation, the Cullens attack along with their allies. Several of them are later killed. The Volturi also suffer heavy losses: Aros' most powerful members of the guard, Jane and Alec, and his brothers Marcus and Caius are killed. Finally, Bella and Edward manage to destroy Aro with their combined forces. The last thing Aro sees is the flaming torch of fire threatening to light his torn head.

The next shot shows Aros horrified and yet unscathed face: It becomes clear that the fight is just a vision of Alice, which Aro has just witnessed. At the same time, Nahuel, a 150-year-old half-vampire, and his foster mother Huilen enter the clearing to testify as further witnesses in favor of Renesmée. Nahuel tells his life story, from which it emerges for the Volturi that he has existed unnoticed by both humans and the Volturi themselves for 150 years. This eliminates the last pretext for an attack. Visibly reluctant, Aro withdraws with the rest of the Volturi and the Cullens enjoy the peace they have regained. Through Nahuel they also learn that Renesmée will be fully grown in a few years and will not age anymore, which means that worries about the girl's future are superfluous. In another vision, Alice sees the adult Renesmée and Jacob together as a couple. Bella manages to temporarily lift her protective shield, making it possible for Edward to read her mind for the first time. She shows him all her memories of the past years with him.

production

In mid-June 2010, Summit Entertainment confirmed that the fourth part of the Twilight saga would be split into two films. Bill Condon directed both films. It was also announced that Melissa Rosenberg was the scriptwriter of the film. The film was shot together with the first part for cost reasons. Most of the shooting took place in Baton Rouge , Louisiana and at Raleigh Studios in Baton Rouge. The work in Vancouver was completed. The film was shot from November 1, 2010 to March 15, 2011. In 2012, Bill Condon confirmed that he would shoot some scenes again to correct technical defects.

Since Renesmee ages rapidly in a short period of time, the character was also represented by Abigail Cornell, Isabella Iannuzzi, Milli Wilkinson, Eliza Faria, Tate Clemons, Taylor Dianne Robinson, Kailyn Stratton, Rachel St. Gelais, Blythe Barrington-Hughes and Christie Burke alongside Mackenzie Foy shown.

At the end of the film, all actors from the Twilight films are shown again.

Reviews

The criticism of Breaking Dawn - Until the end of the night - Part 2 was mixed. Dimitrios Athanassiou at moviemaze.de sums up his evaluation as follows: "Five films, a boring plot and a kitsch that is looking for its equal." Nevertheless, he is sure that the fans of this saga will "ensure" "that the last part is also a blockbuster. The story about Bella and Edward" fits "easily on a beer mat." Overall, there is no tension for him.

Doris Kuhn from sueddeutsche.de rates the film as "slow" at the beginning and "tries to keep promises that have long been made. There are not many surprises here." She compares the development of the plot like painting by numbers, in which "a feeling of the inevitable" lies above everything, as in the last Harry Potter film. "Everything is predetermined, on a plot line chiseled in stone, everything decided and laid down decades ago," you know, "what has to happen, and woe betide, something deviates from it." It "is execution, execution" and that the final is formally delayed.

A positive voice comes from filmstarts.de. Christoph Petersen awards three stars out of a possible 5 and judges: “Director Bill Condon ('Dreamgirls') brings the film to an end as a martial epic, which four years earlier in Catherine Hardwicke's 'Twilight' was a comparatively harmless small-town love triangle between a young girl , a glittering vampire and a six-pack werewolf. The result is a worthy conclusion to one of the greatest pop culture phenomena of our time, in which the battle itself is convincing, while the preparation for the duel takes longer than necessary. "

The series junkies, on the other hand, have a lot of praise:

“Fans of the Twilight franchise should have very little fault with this last part. "Breaking Dawn - Until (s) the end of the night - Part 2" is a film that - from my point of view - is aimed exclusively at you and nobody else on this earth. And from this point of view, the film turned out well, despite the embarrassing CGI. Real Twihards will not be able to avoid having to wipe a few tears off their faces when the credits roll. "

Differences to the book template

Summit Entertainment has decided to change the end of the book in the film to surprise the audience and make the audience even more curious about the latest film. At first it looks as if there will be an open battle between the warring parties. In retrospect, however, the fight scenes turn out to be Alice's vision of the future, which ultimately does not materialize because Aro can be dissuaded from his original plan to attack in any case. With a running time of 116 minutes, Breaking Dawn - Bite to the End of the Night - Part 2 is the shortest film in the Twilight series and is one minute shorter than its predecessor.
