action

In the fourth volume of the history of the Twilight saga, the conflict between the Cullens and the Volturi comes to a head. Edward and Bella get married and have a family. The book is divided into three parts or books. The first and third books are told from Bellas, the second from Jacob's point of view.

first book

Bella and Edward get married. At the wedding there is almost a scandal when Bella Jacob tells about the planned honeymoon. In a rage, he leaves the party.

Shortly afterwards, Edward and Bella set off on their honeymoon on an island not far from the coast of Rio de Janeiro . Edward redeems his promise to sleep with the still human Bella. As expected, complications arise because, while he can control himself not to bite her, he inadvertently bruises and bruises numerous times. During his honeymoon, he learns how to sleep with her without hurting her.

Bella shows the first symptoms of pregnancy after just a few days. When she becomes aware of this and tells Edward, Edward reacts unexpectedly: Deeply shocked, he immediately tries to organize an abortion. Bella manages to win over Rosalie, who supports her against the rest of the Cullen family.

second book

Jacob learns from Charlie that Bella is back in Forks and that she is seriously ill. From this he concludes that Bella is now a vampire and decides to take revenge on Edward. However, the pack does not see the contract between the wolves and the Cullens as broken because Bella wanted the transformation. At the Cullen's house, he finds Bella seriously ill. Pregnancy progresses very quickly. Edward begs him to convince Bella to have an abortion, but Jacob fails too.

When the pack finds out about the unborn child, it sees it as a threat to the people of Forks and LaPush. Sam decides to attack the Cullens and kill Bella's baby, including her. Jacob cannot allow this and leaves the pack. Seth and Leah join him. Since no surprise attack can take place, Sam refrains from attacking.

Meanwhile, Bella's condition is rapidly deteriorating. She can no longer hold on to food and infusions are also unsuccessful. Jacob gives the Cullens the idea to give Bella blood to drink because they suspect the baby might be more vampire than human. The plan works and Bella's condition improves. But this has side effects: Not only is Bella getting stronger now, but the baby too. Bella suffers multiple broken ribs that Carlisle must treat.

A few days later the baby is startled by a jerky movement from Bella's and now moves uncontrollably inside her, which causes her placenta to detach. With Carlisle absent at this time, Edward and Jacob must deliver the baby themselves before it can kill Bella. Bella gives birth to a healthy girl they call Renesmée. However, she herself threatens to die. Edward, with Jacob's permission, injects her own poison into her heart and bites her in several places so that the poison spreads faster. Jacob, who no longer believes in Bella's salvation, wants revenge on the baby he blames for her death. As he approaches Renesmée, however, he realizes that he has been “imprinted” on her. In the process, a special bond between her and him that cannot be influenced is built up that will last a lifetime.

Third book

The birth of Renesmée is told again, this time from Bella's point of view. Despite the morphine Edward gave her, Bella feels the excruciating pain of the transformation. When she finally wakes up, her senses are sharpened.

As a vampire, she feels strong, graceful, and perfect. With human blood still in her veins, she is stronger as a newborn than any other Cullen. Before she can see her daughter, Edward takes her out hunting for the first time to avoid accidentally injuring or killing Renesmée. Newborn vampires usually have no control over themselves. However, Bella is able to control herself. She resists the smell of humans and hunts animals with discipline. When she also passes Jacob's test, she is allowed to see Renesmée. She learns that the baby has the gift of showing other people their thoughts in pictures by touch. She also learns that Jacob has shaped her daughter, which she cannot approve at first. Renesmée grows very quickly and can feed on both human food and blood.

Through a vision from Alice, the Cullens learn that the Volturi want to come to them to destroy them. A vampire - Irina - saw Bella and Renesmée hunting them and thought the girl was an immortal child, that is, a child who had been turned into a vampire. This is forbidden on death penalty in the vampire world.

Alice advises Carlisle to look for allies who can testify to the Volturi that Renesmée, unlike immortal children, grows and learns and therefore does not pose a threat to the vampire secret. Shortly thereafter, Alice and Jasper are gone and the Cullens assume they won't be back. They follow Alice's advice and seek out all known vampires, while Edward, Bella and Renesmée stay behind in Forks, and send the vampires to them. Little by little, various circles and individual vampires arrive who, after initial doubts, are ready to testify and, if necessary, to fight the Volturi. Furthermore, the pack around Sam and Jacob want to support the Cullens in the fight against the Volturi.

Over time, Bella discovers her gift: She can create a mental protective shield in which she can wrap the vampires present in order to protect them from the psychic abilities of hostile vampires. As part of the preparations, the Witnesses help her to further develop her gift. Bella also finds clues that Alice has left for her and that leads her to a lawyer in Seattle. Bella has forged papers made by him for Jacob and Renesmée so that they can escape if the Cullens do not survive the upcoming fight against the Volturi.

On the day the Volturi arrived, the Cullens went to a clearing with their witnesses and the wolves . There they meet the Volturi, who in turn have brought witnesses with them. When it turns out that Renesmée is not a created vampire, a fight seems avoidable. But the Volturi use the pretext that they do not know what will become of the child in the future, in order to implement their plan to wipe out the stubborn Cullen family and their witnesses. Bella pulls her protective shield around family, friends and wolves, preventing the Volturi's preparatory attacks from being successful. At the last moment Alice and Jasper return from South America with a half-vampire named Nahuel and his aunt Huilen. He tells his life story, from which it can be seen for the Volturi that he has lived unnoticed for 150 years. This eliminates the last pretext for an attack.

Irina is destroyed by the Volturi on the grounds that they have spun intrigues against the Cullens.

Bella and Edward happily return to their own cottage that Esme gave them for their wedding. Edward is able to read Bella's mind for the first time when she manages to momentarily pick up her shield for him. The book ends with the words “And then we continued blissfully into this small but perfect piece of our forever.” (Eng .: We continued our journey into the small but perfect part of our eternity.)
