content

The 17-year-old main character Bella - whose full name is Isabella Marie Swan - is moving from sunny Phoenix in Arizona to her father Charlie in rainy Forks on the Washington coast so that her mother Renée has more time for herself and her new husband Phil. Bella quickly makes new friends in Forks, and much to her embarrassment, some boys who are soon vying for her attention. But she especially notices the mysterious and handsome Edward Cullen, who is initially hostile towards her, but who talks to her in a friendly manner the next time they meet. His adoptive siblings Alice, Emmett, Jasper and Rosalie also avoid Bella. In a car accident in the school parking lot, Bella is only saved by Edward's amazingly quick responsiveness and strength. Startled, she demands an explanation from him, but he evades her question and leaves it to her to find the answer.

On a trip to a beach on the La Push Indian Reservation , Bella meets Jacob (also called Jake) Black, a native of the Quileute tribe whom she knows from previous visits to her father. He tells her that the Quileute consider the Cullens to be "cold beings", that is, vampires . Jacob sees the story as an old legend , but provides Bella with a first important clue to Edward's true identity.

Bella goes to Port Angeles with Jessica and Angela . While searching for a bookstore, Bella gets lost and gets into trouble again. Edward unexpectedly appears again to save her. At a subsequent dinner, the two question each other, but only on the drive home Bella dares to ask him about her suspicions. Edward confirms her suspicion and says that his family, being “ vegetarians ”, drinks animal blood instead of human blood. He can read the minds of others himself, but Bella seems to be an exception - frustratingly - as he is unable to read their minds. Another specialty of Bellas is her bewitching scent, which repeatedly challenges Edward's self-control, which explains his sometimes strange behavior towards her.

Bella and Edward fall in love and often spend time together. Finally, Edward introduces her to his family. Alice, Jasper, Emmett, Carlisle and Esme give Bella a friendly welcome, but Rosalie holds back. According to Edward, she's the only one in the family who finds it difficult to come to terms with being a vampire and would rather be human again. That's why Rosalie is, in a way, jealous of Bella. During a round of vampire baseball, three strange vampires named Victoria, James and Laurent appear. Unlike the Cullens, they drink human blood. Edward notices that James is a tracker, that is, a manhunter who does not let go of his prey until the victim is dead.

James realizes that Bella is human and starts chasing her. Bella is then brought to Phoenix by Alice and Jasper. After James made her believe on the phone a short time later that he was holding her mother prisoner, Bella escaped her protectors to face the tracker. She meets James in a former ballet studio and learns that she has been deceived and that her mother is not in his power. Bella has no chance against James and is bitten by him. The Cullens arrive at the scene. At the last moment, Edward saves Bella by sucking James' venom from her blood to prevent her turning into a vampire. James is killed by the Cullens.

After a hospital stay, Bella is taken to the high school year prom by Edward . There she meets Jacob again, who is to warn her about Edward at his father's request. The families of the Blacks and the Cullens have been enemies for generations. Bella does not want to move away from her romantic idea of a life together with Edward and expresses her desire to be turned into a vampire. However, Edward refuses to comply with her request, as he wants a human life for her.
