Until (s) to lunch hour (English original title: New Moon ) is a 2006 novel by the American author Stephenie Meyer and the continuation of the book Bis (s) zum Dawn .

action

For her 18th birthday, Alice Cullen is holding a small birthday party for Bella among the Cullen family. When Bella accidentally cuts her finger bloody while unwrapping her presents, she is almost attacked by Jasper, the last vampire to join the Cullen clan , who has the least self-control of all. Edward blames himself for the incident, which is why he shortly afterwards leaves town with his family on the pretext of not wanting to be with Bella anymore. Bella lost herself in grief for months and hardly noticed her surroundings during this time.

Only when she unconsciously puts herself in danger does she wake up from her trance because she unexpectedly hears Edward's voice. She becomes addicted to these hallucinations and therefore takes ever greater risks. Bella asks her friend Jacob "Jake" Black to repair two motorbikes that she bought for free, in order to put herself in danger again with them. Bella and Jacob become best friends over time. But from one day to the next, Jacob breaks off contact with Bella. Then she threatens to be overwhelmed by her grief for Edward, and now also for Jacob. She fights for her friendship and learns that Jacob has turned into a werewolf, the greatest enemy of the vampires, and has now joined a whole pack of werewolves, all of whom are members of his tribe. At the same time, Victoria, the former partner of James (the vampire from " Till Dawn, " whom Edward and his family killed), shows up in Forks to avenge the death of James. Before that, she sent Laurent to check if Bella is still under the protection of the Cullens, but the wolf pack destroys the Cullens when they try to kill Bella.

Hoping to hear Edward's voice again, Bella jumps off a cliff and almost drowns, but is saved by Jacob. When she then returns home, she finds Alice Cullen there, who saw her die in a vision. Due to a misunderstanding, Edward also believes that Bella is dead. He travels to Volterra in Italy. This city belongs to the Volturi, powerful vampires who are in a sense the royal family of the vampire world. Edward tries to get her to destroy him so that she can follow Bella to death. Alice learns of these plans and tells Bella about them. You're going to Italy to save Edward. He plans to show himself in a busy place in the sun (vampires start to glitter in the sun like diamonds in Stephenie Meyer's books). This would cause the Volturi to destroy him, because they want to keep the vampire world secret from the people, especially from those in their city. Although Bella can prevent Edward from carrying out his plan in time, she and Alice are led to the Volturi by three vampires. After Alice shows Aro, one of the three Volturi leaders, through a vision that Bella will be turned into a vampire by the Cullens in the near future, she is let go.

Once in Forks, much to Edward's displeasure, Bella lets the Cullens vote on her mortality. Five of the seven Cullens vote for Bella to be turned into a vampire and part of their family. Edward and Rosalie vote against. Carlisle promises Bella to transform her at the end of the school year. The fact that the vampires are the enemies of the werewolves makes a friendship between Jacob and Bella impossible, which especially pains Bella, since Jacob was always there for her during Edward's absence. But Bella vows to find a way to keep her best friend.

useful information

  • The original English title New Moon stands for the darkest time in Bella's life: a moonless night. Later, too, the two main male characters, Edward and Jacob, are repeatedly compared with the moon and the sun. This symbolism is also shown by the title of the third book Eclipse (German: solar eclipse): The moon stands in front of the sun.
  • Stephenie Meyer disagreed with the cover as it had no symbolic meaning, but had no power to influence the design.
