Stephenie Meyer [ ˈmeɪɚ ], née Morgan (born December 24, 1973 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is an American writer. Around 155 million books of her Twilight tetralogy have been sold worldwide, 11 million of them in German.

Life

Stephenie Meyer is the second oldest of six children. The unusual spelling of her name comes from the name of her father Stephen . At the age of four, Meyer and her family moved to Phoenix , Arizona , where she grew up and still lives today. She attended high school in Scottsdale , Arizona and graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo , Utah on a scholarship for English . Meyer has been married to her childhood friend Christian since 1994 and has three sons.

Meyer is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( Mormons ) which, according to her own statement on its official website, has had a great impact on her life and writing.

She was best known for the Bis (s) youth book series about the relationship between Isabella (called Bella) Swan, a high school student, and Edward Cullen, a vampire. Most of the story is told from Bella's first-person perspective .

The first volume Twilight (German title Bis (s) zum Morgengrauen ) appeared on October 5, 2005 and became an international bestseller. The basic idea behind the plot of Twilight is based on a dream from June 2, 2003, which prompted Meyer to write her book. She saw a young girl and a vampire meet in a clearing and fall madly in love. This story can be found in Chapter 13 of Twilight . Meyer chose the name Bella because she always wanted to call her daughter that.

The second volume, New Moon (German title Bis (s) zur Mittagsstunde ) appeared in September 2006 and stayed at number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list for over 30 weeks . The third part Eclipse (German title Bis (s) zum Abendrot ) was published in August 2007 and was similarly successful.

In May 2008, Meyer's first book appeared in the United States, which, according to the author, is aimed at adult readers, the science fiction novel The Host (German title Seelen ).

In 2008, the Bis (s) series from the point of view of Jacobs and Bellas was completed with the fourth volume Breaking Dawn (German title Bis (s) zum Ende der Nacht ), this time the reader response was mixed.

In August of the same year she went on a musical and literary tour with Blue October front man Justin Furstenfeld . He wrote the song My Never (on the album Approaching Normal ) for this tour.

After completing the Bis (s) series, Meyer initially worked on Midnight Sun , an additional volume about the events in Bis (s) dawn from Edward's point of view. The author published the first chapter as a teaser on her website. (German version, see web links ) In August 2008 Meyer announced that he would cease work on Midnight Sun until further notice, as her drafts of some chapters had been illegally distributed on the Internet, and officially made the present draft manuscripts of Midnight Sun available to readers on her website Available.

In June 2010, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner appeared: An Eclipse Novella (German title Bis (s) zum Erste Sonnenstrahl - Das Brief Second Life of Bree Tanner ), a spin-off novel from the Bis (s) series.

At the end of July 2017 it was announced that Meyer would produce the planned 2018 television series The Rook based on the novel by Daniel O'Malley .

Meyer also wrote the Forever Dawn manuscript . It was the original sequel to Twilight but was never released. Instead, she gave the work to her sister as a gift.

Midnight Sun (German title Edward at first sight ), which retells the first volume from the point of view of Edward Cullen, existed for a long time only in manuscript form. By 2020, only the first twelve chapters had been published on Stephenie Meyer's website. In Germany Carlsen Verlag 2008 brought a German translation as bound special edition under the title of Edward at first glance out that the first chapter of Midnight Sun contains. The book was given away to booksellers and did not go on sale.

criticism

According to Time magazine, Stephenie Meyer is one of the hundred most influential people in the world. She is preparing to be the successor to " Harry Potter " author Joanne K. Rowling .

The Germany radio called Meyer's work as "perfect mix of clichéd love story and action and thriller motifs enriched with fantasy and horror elements. [Meyer's] characters are simply structured and stereotyped, their language is flippant and simple and the happy ending is predictable. "

Meyer's worldview is sharply criticized by the German media, who describe it as “reactionary”: According to the ZDF culture magazine “Aspects”, “Stephenie Meyer's novels [...] fit perfectly into a reactionary worldview that is widespread in the USA and even state sponsored becomes. The message: sex before marriage is dangerous. Teenagers take 'vows of chastity'. To this extent that would be unthinkable in Germany. ” Die Welt called Meyer's vampire books“ a 1500-page […] plea for premarital instinct renunciation ”as well as“ modern ”and“ oversexualized ”. The British The Independent called Meyer's work "shockingly sexist" and described Meyer's main character Bella Swan as a "suffering, passive victim".

On her website Meyer defends herself against the accusation that her main character Bella Swan is an " anti-feminist heroine". Meyer himself defines feminism as “the possibility of self-fulfillment” and points out that Bella consciously chooses love and self- surrender (“she chooses romantic love over everything else”), so in her opinion she is strong and independent.

In August 2009, 19-year-old author Jordan Scott went public with allegations of recognizing similarities to her book The Nocturne in Breaking Dawn (Until the end of the night) . Meyer's spokespersons reject these statements, claiming that neither the author nor she have ever heard of The Nocturne and its author.

The author was also criticized by Stephen King . Compared to Rowling, he noted:

“The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good. "

“The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a great writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write a bit. It's not very good. "
