Souls (original title The Host ) is an American science fiction film from 2013 . The director Andrew Niccol produced the film in collaboration with the US film company Metropolitan Filmexport and Open Road Films. It is based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer . The film opened in Germany on June 6, 2013 and in US cinemas on March 29, 2013.

action

The action takes place in a fictional future of the earth. Aliens, which humans call souls, have populated the earth and built a new system there. The souls use people as hosts and take full control of their bodies and memories. Almost all people now harbor souls. If an occupied human body dies, the soul is removed by so-called healers and either implanted in a new body or sent to one of the other occupied planets with the help of a kind of transport box.

The few still free people hide in forests, caves and deserts. 19-year-old Melanie Stryder is one of the last people and a rebel. She falls in love with Jared while on the run. She is on the road with her little brother and Jared, but is caught by a group of seekers and after jumping out of a window she is brought to the hospital. There a soul named Wanderer is used for her. While in most cases the old self of the host body is extinguished very soon, Melanie defends herself against the intruder and thus remains in her body. Wanderer is overwhelmed by Melanie's memories and feelings. Melanie is not ready to leave Wanderer her body without a fight. The seeker who caught Melanie wants to transfer Wanderer into another body in order to then erase Melanie's self, which had been revealed through an attack on the seeker. Wanderer flees and is led by Melanie to the hiding place of the last remaining people. After initial skepticism, people gradually make friends with Wanderer, whose name has meanwhile been changed to Wanda; the young Ian and Wanda fall in love. Melanie still loves Jared, but fails to assert herself against Wanda.

After the escape from Wanda, the seeker goes doggedly in search of her. On trips to get food and medicine, two people are followed by seekers and die in a frontal crash. When people experiment to separate souls from people again, several souls and their hosts are killed. Wanda witnesses these failed attempts by humans, but after her initial horror at the murder of her fellow species, she shows the humans how they can successfully remove the souls from the respective host without killing either of the two. In this process, the people succeed in catching the seeker who is chasing Wanda, extracting her soul and sending her to another occupied planet. Wanda now wants to sacrifice herself in sisterly love in order to give Melanie back her body and the life with Jered and Jamie. However, instead of following Wanda's request and letting her die in her lovesickness, after about a month people put her in the body of a young woman who would otherwise have died after separating from the soul that occupied him, and thus save theirs in return Friend Wanda.

A few months later, Jared, Melanie, Ian and Wanda come under a nightly control and are apparently caught by seekers. They find out that Wanda is cooperating with humans, but it is not about seekers, but about another group of humans, and it turns out that there are other souls who have allied with humans.

Reviews

"Andrew Niccol, who already impressively drew a future world in" Gattaca ", is adapting a science fiction novel by Stephenie Meyers, who is extremely successful with the" Twilight "saga. She also demonstrates her sense of teenage sensibilities in this romance. With Saoirse Ronan ("Who is Hanna?") And Diane Kruger as rivals and Jeremy Iron's talented son Max as love interests of both, Niccol also has an appealing cast. "

"The Mormon Stephenie Meyer can obviously only imagine a resistance cell against a totalitarian threat as a kitschy Christian early church, hidden in caves, led by a bearded, strict patriarch. [...] As in the Twilight series, the strange propaganda for chastity unpleasant noticed, one always has the impression in souls that one has to follow the very specific preferences of an author who has a completely closed worldview. "

- Critic.de

“The viewer can look forward to some schizophrenic conversations and power struggles - which unfortunately seem less spectacular than boring and disturbing. ... This is partly due to Saoirse Ronan, who follows in the footsteps of Kristen Stewart: a nice girl who may not look quite as depressed as Bella in Twilight and who is also able to close her mouth, but she does too boredom in your eyes and bones. ... Melanie becomes bored through the scenery, as if one had not added a soul to her, but rather pumped both out and then left her as an empty shell in the desert. ... Stephanie Meyer remains true to herself: anemic and soulless romantic kitsch, which Twilight far surpasses when it comes to boredom. "
