action

The film is set in the future and describes a new form of the global economic system . The currencies have been replaced by lifetime, which like money can be earned, spent, given away or stolen. In this future, the aging process of every person due to genetic engineering ends at the age of 25. In order to avoid overpopulation of the earth, there is a remaining lifetime of one year, which is displayed as a countdown by an implanted clock on the forearm . As soon as this clock runs out, the wearer dies on the spot. Additional time can be added as wages, donations or theft, with the transfer using special scanners or by placing the right forearms on top of each other. The rich live almost forever and do not age, while the poor die early. The whole world was divided into time zones in which the different social classes live.

The protagonist Will Salas lives in the Dayton Ghetto , where people live from one day to the next and rarely have more than one day left on their watch. One evening, in a bar, Will rescues the 105-year-old, suicidal Henry Hamilton from Fortis and his gang, the so-called "Minute Men", a group of criminals who rob others of their lives. Asleep, Will receives this transmitted over 116 years from the rescued person before the latter takes his own life by letting the remaining minutes of his life clock run down. Previously, in an interview with Will, Hamilton named the rich as the reason the poor have to die earlier.

In the evening, Will wants to meet his mother Rachel. She cannot pay for the bus with her remaining time due to a fare increase, and none of the bus passengers is willing to help her. Despite the great distance, she is forced to make her way home on foot. Will runs towards her, but in the end only a few seconds are missing to be able to establish the physical contact necessary for the transfer of a time credit, and his mother falls dead into his arms.

Will decides to get to the bottom of Hamilton's statement. He crossed some time zones and came to New Greenwich, a district of the upper class. There he met the very wealthy financial mogul Philippe Weis. When playing poker at the casino he wins 1,100 years of Philippe and became acquainted with his daughter Sylvia. But now he is being followed and arrested by the police called "Timekeeper". "Timekeeper" Raymond Leon insinuates that Will stole Hamilton's lifetime and then killed him. Leon confiscates Will's entire time except for two hours. When Leon turns away, Will overpowers his assistant, takes Sylvia hostage and flees back to Dayton. There he drives over a nail band laid out by the “Minute Men” ; after the vehicle crash, Fortis robs the unconscious Sylvia of her life. Will and Sylvia can just save themselves the next day by selling Sylvia's earrings .

After Philippe Weis did not pay the required ransom of 1000 years to the social station in Dayton, Sylvia doubts her father's morale . Finally, they are tracked down by Leon just as Will is about to let Sylvia go. Sylvia shoots and wounds Leon. But instead of stealing the helpless person's life, Will transfers two hours of his time to Leon's watch so that the timekeeper can get out of Dayton alive, and flees into Leon's car with Sylvia, who has fallen in love with Will and wants to stay with him. With the police car they stop a car with a driver and rob the passenger's lifetime.

Will and Sylvia become a couple and begin raiding their father's time banks. They loot time capsules , electronic storage devices in which time is stored and from which it can be transferred. They distribute these to the poor. A bounty is placed on the couple. Eventually they are tracked down by Fortis and his "Minute Men". Will has to fight an arm wrestling duel with Fortis , trying to transfer the opponent's time to himself. When he almost succumbs, Will can use a trick he learned from his father to drain Fortis' entire time and shoot his henchman.

Wills and Sylvia's raids threaten to throw the system of rule out of joint. The powerful counter this by drastically increasing the cost of living in the ghettos and thus restoring the old difference between rich and poor. Will realizes that unless they have a million years of time they can ultimately do nothing against the establishment . They then decide to attack Sylvia's father themselves. This succeeds by infiltrating Will as a bodyguard . So they steal a time capsule with a credit of a million years. They take them to Dayton and hand them over to a girl for distribution to the poor.

On their escape, they are caught by Leon, who tracks them down on the way to the next time zone. Just as he is about to arrest her, he realizes that he forgot to have his daily credit credited to him. His time is running out and he dies. Sylvia and Will, who each have only a minute left and think they are as good as dead, run to Leon's car to have Leon's daily credit transferred. Will succeeds, and at the last second he manages to touch Sylvia's arm and thereby save her from death as well.

As a result of Will and Sylvia's intervention in the system, operations in the factories come to a halt. Tens of thousands of people make their way to New Greenwich because they now have enough time on their watches to pay for the transition to the next time zone and to be able to afford amenities. The timekeepers realize that they cannot stop the masses from entering the richer time zones. In the final scene, Will and Sylvia are sitting in a car and see on the news that their bounty has increased. They get out, unlock their weapons and go up the stairs of a gigantic bank building to ambush it.

Reviews

“Those who do not accept the absurd initial situation of the plot will not enjoy the science fiction allegory , especially since the action scenes offer a lot of running, but few spectacular highlights. The numerous hidden references are far more exciting. 'In Time' not only touches on topics such as youth mania and social Darwinism , but can also be read as an astonishingly up-to-date commentary on the global upheavals of the banking crisis. At this level, the film unfolds an enormous subversive power. "

“It's a lot of fun watching director Andrew Niccol juggle all his ideas around time as currency. It's easy to cope with the fact that Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried don't really sparkle on screen. "

- filmstarts .de

“What could have become one of the best films in the Gattaca tradition with a little better timing has turned out to be just an average entertainment film in a mixture of road movie, Bonny & Clyde , love story and modern Robin Hood without enough bite. Did we see the pilot for a television series here? The trailer, which made more expectations, will nevertheless drive viewers to the cinema. In Time isn't really bad, but in anticipation of something really big, it's bitter to only see mediocrity. "

- moviemaze.de

“Well, 'In Time' can easily be seen as a science fiction action spectacle, but in my opinion you just don't do justice to the script and the idea behind it. The basic idea behind it is much more to be seen as very socially critical. "

- Filmewelt.net

“The action film takes an interesting narrative approach by mirroring anti-capitalist actions of the 1970s into the future, which in turn points back to the social grievances of the present. The staging never gets a formal grip on the attractive topic. "
