Cartier is a French jewelry and watch company owned by the Swiss luxury goods group Richemont .

history

In 1847, Louis-Francois Cartier took over his master’s jewelry workshop in Paris, laying the foundations for what is now Cartier. The hand-made jewelry quickly enjoyed success, so a few years later Cartier supplied the French Empress Eugenie with his jewelry creations. As a result of its success, the company grew rapidly, which is why it was necessary to move to the Boulevard des Italiens in 1859 . At the same time, the company is expanding its range of clocks that it has made in-house. In 1874, the founder's son, Louis-François-Alfred Cartier, joined the company and began building up the company's watch division. He exhibited his first wristwatches as early as 1888, but initially only sold them hesitantly until the turn of the century. In 1898, Alfred Cartier's son joined the family business and, in addition to pocket and wrist watches, also made pendulum clocks. In November 1899, he relocated his headquarters to 13 rue de la Paix in order to meet the needs of wealthy customers. In the following years, two other sons of Alfred Cartier, Jacques and Pierre Cartier, joined the company and opened the first branch in London in 1902. A short time later, Cartier became purveyor to the royal family. In 1904 the first pilot's watch called "Cartier Santos" was developed and enjoyed great success. It was the first wristwatch with a leather strap. In 1907 the company made the leap to Russia. In 1909 the first Cartier store in America opened on Fifth Avenue in New York. With creations like the “Trinity” ring (1918) and the “Pantherring” (1935), the company's success continued to grow. With the deaths of Louis Cartier (1942) and Pierre Cartier (1965), the company went through difficult times and fell into three parts. It was not until 1974 that the three parts were combined to form the new “Cartier Monde” group. After purchasing several luxury goods manufacturers, the “Cartier Monde” becomes the “Vendome Luxury Group”. Cartier has been part of the "Richemont Group" since 1997.
