action

The story is about the short life of the newborn vampire Bree Tanner. In contrast to the Cullen family, who have a completely “vegetarian” diet, that is, they do without human blood and drink animal blood instead, Bree thirsts for human blood. The action takes place first in Seattle, then in Forks and describes a period of a few days until the fight with the Cullens and the subsequent annihilation of Bree by the Volturi.

Bree has lived with a bunch of wild young vampires for months. The group is led by a vampire named Riley, whom Bree does not like and who has a hard time keeping the newborn under control. So it happens again and again that the group decimates itself through violent excesses. The vampires are created by the vampire woman Victoria, but they never see her. Only Riley meets with her regularly. In order to protect himself from the aggressive vampires, Bree behaves very inconspicuously within the group by hiding behind a vampire named Fred, who seems to have a special gift: Other vampires feel an unpleasant aversion towards him, which they hardly do makes it possible to even look at him, let alone get closer to him.

During a foray through Seattle, Bree, reluctantly at first, becomes friends with the vampire Diego and falls in love with him. Together they discover below that Riley lied to them about a number of things: For example, the newborns believe that they would burn in the sunlight, although this is not true. They try to find out the truth and the reason for their existence, while spying on Riley and Victoria. They then decide to run away together. Before that, however, Diego wants to confront Riley alone and then does not return to the house where the newborns are hiding. Instead, upon his return, Riley tells the newborns that a neighboring vampire circle, the Cullens, wants to challenge Seattle as a hunting ground for them and that they have to defend it. The newborn vampires are then trained for an upcoming fight. However, Riley himself does not know that Victoria actually wants to avenge her partner James, who was killed by Edward, through the death of Edward's human friend Bella. In private, Riley tells troubled Bree that Diego is with Victoria and that she would meet him again on the day of the fight. When the day comes and Bree still has nowhere to spot Diego, she realizes that Riley and Victoria must have killed him days ago.

In battle, the newborns are defeated and Bree only survives because she doesn't want to fight the Cullens. The Cullens decide to spare her and give her a chance for a change of life. She thinks she is safe until the Italian Volturi, the oldest vampire circle and "vampire police", appear at the scene. Regardless of the fact that Bree knew nothing of the Volturi's laws and could therefore not obey them, the Volturi destroyed the young newborns as punishment for the conspicuously committed murders in Seattle on the grounds that the Volturi did not give them a second chance.
