action

17-year-old Bella Swan is moving from sunny Phoenix , Arizona to her father Charlie in rainy Forks on the Washington coast so that her mother Renée has more time for herself and her new baseball husband, Phil. In Forks, Bella quickly makes new friends and, much to her embarrassment, a few boys who are soon vying for her attention.

But she especially noticed the mysterious Edward Cullen, who treated her very negatively. His adoptive siblings Alice, Emmett, Jasper and Rosalie also seem aloof. At a later meeting he is initially nice to her, but later leaves her without a word. In a car accident in the school parking lot, Bella is only saved by Edward's amazingly quick responsiveness and strength. Startled, she demands an explanation from him. However, he evades her question and leaves it to her to find the answer.

On a trip to the beach in La Push , Bella meets Jacob "Jake" Black, a native of a nearby Quileute reserve, whom she knows from previous visits to her father. He tells her that the Quileute think the Cullens are "cold beings". Jacob portrays the story as an ancient legend, but Bella sees it as the key to Edward's true identity and does more research into the legends of the Quileute. To do this, she visits a bookstore on a trip to Port Angeles , a larger city nearby. On the way back, she meets a group of pushy drunkards. As if out of nowhere, Edward appears in his car and saves Bella from the dangerous situation. Then he invites her to eat, but does not eat anything himself. During dinner, Bella demands answers from Edward, whereupon he confesses to her that he can read minds and is attracted to her.

After Bella later confronted Edward with her suspicion that he was a vampire and he confessed the truth to her, she also got to know his family. While the majority of the Cullens are happy for Bella and Edward, Rosalie cannot accept the risk for the Cullens, as the situation with Bella as a human being among vampires could end badly.

Edward invites Bella to play a Cullens baseball game. During the game, three vampires named Victoria, James and Laurent appear. Unlike the Cullens, they drink human blood and are responsible for a number of murders in the area. After James recognizes Bella as a person, the groups separate peacefully for the time being. But soon James starts chasing Bella. Laurent specifically warns the Cullens about James and Victoria.

Bella flees to Phoenix with Alice and Jasper. After receiving a call from James and learning that he is holding her mother prisoner, Bella escapes her companions to face James and save her mother. In the ballet studio she attended in her childhood, Bella meets James, who lied to her and her mother is beyond his control. He only played the amateur videos of Bella and her mother on the phone. Bella is bitten by James, causing his venom to spread through her bloodstream. James is overwhelmed, torn to pieces and burned by the arriving Cullens, ending the hunt for Bella. Edward sucks James' poison from Bella's blood, preventing her from turning into a vampire.

After a hospital stay, Bella is taken to the high school prom by Edward and meets Jacob again, who, at his father's request, is to warn her about Edward. But Bella wishes to stay with Edward forever. Still, he refuses to turn her into a vampire because he wants a human life for her. He promises her a long life by his side.

reception

The Twilight cast

The American critics were cautious about the film: Rotten Tomatoes gathered 204 reviews, 51% of which were negative and 49% neutral or positive, and rated Twilight in summary: “Having lost much of its bite transitioning to the big screen, Twilight will please its devoted fans, but do little for the uninitiated. "( Since Twilight lost a lot of bite when it was made into a film, the film will please fans who are devoted to the book series, but normal moviegoers will hardly like it. )

Dimitrios Anathanassios writes on Moviemaze.de that he didn't like the film at all because of the bad story. “What do you get when vampire myths, school romances and daily soap plots are combined? A story that lacks any bite. "The film is only suitable for teenagers," but little is offered here for the vampire fan or the film buff who expects a good story ". He gives the film 2 out of 10 possible points.

Björn Helbig from Filmstarts.de is of the opinion that the director “achieved an acceptable teen vampire smack for the H&M generation with a lot of lard and icing . With more speed and less pompous looks the film would have been more entertaining and overall better ”. With a rating of 5 out of 10 stars, it is slightly below the European average.

Julia Evers awarded three out of six possible stars in the OÖN of January 17, 2009 and said that this was the stuff that teenage girls all over the world had tasted blood on. The love between Bella and the vampire Edward is full of metaphors of sexual abstinence. The director shows a stylish, modern pop youth film in which the dialogues alternate between pathos and (involuntary) joke and parts of the plot and meaning of the secondary characters are often only accessible to those who know the book.

Christina Krisch , on the other hand, said in the Kronen Zeitung of January 15, 2009 that the director had staged a stirring Romeo and Juliet romance in a bloodsucking milieu, which practiced in touching, tenderly chaste soul kinship. The film lives completely from the chemistry of the charismatic young actors.

Budget and revenue

The film grossed approximately 192.7 million US dollars in the USA and worldwide film revenues were 392.6 million US dollars. In Germany the film grossed 23.7 million US dollars, in Switzerland just under 3 million and in Austria just over 2 million US dollars. This gave Germany the highest box office result outside of North America, with a narrow lead over France, where the film grossed 23.5 million. The budget for the film was estimated at $ 37 million.

Soundtrack

The official soundtrack was released in the US on November 4, 2008. It reached the top 10 in many countries and even number 1 on the Billboard album charts in the US at the end of November 2008 . Stephenie Meyer was involved in the compilation of the music. The soundtrack includes the bands Muse and Linkin Park , who, according to the author, played an important role in her writing process. The title song Decode comes from the band Paramore . The video for the song was released on November 3, 2008 and contains scenes from the film.

A digital version of the soundtrack, available on iTunes , includes three bonus songs: Let Me Sign by Robert Pattinson , La Traviata played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Clair de Lune ( APM Orchestra ), which can also be heard in the film.

Another soundtrack entitled Twilight: The Score was also made available for online download on November 25, 2008 and contains instrumental pieces of music from the film. This compilation was released on CD on December 9, 2008.

The film was originally supposed to be released in Germany in January 2010 under the title New Moon - Bis (s) zur lunchtime , but it opened on November 26, 2009.

They won ten out of eleven categories at the Teen Choice Awards 2009 . In 2009 the film was also awarded the golden Bravo Otto .

useful information

The author of the novel, Stephenie Meyer , has a cameo in a restaurant scene when Bella and her father Charlie are eating together . Catherine Hardwicke described this scene, in which the author orders a vegetarian dish, as a little inside joke . This refers to the fact that the vampires in the film refer to themselves as "vegetarian" because they do not eat people. Greg Mooradian, producer of the film, also said that the cameo was a thank you to the fans, who would immediately recognize the author and appreciate it.

In addition, "Spoon" from the MTV show "The Pickup Artist" has a cameo in the restaurant when Edward says he can read the minds of the people in the restaurant and that some are only interested in money and sex. This refers to the fact that pickup artists aim to become the "perfect seducer".
