Helen Catherine Hardwicke (born October 21, 1955 in McAllen , Texas ) is an American production designer , film director and screenwriter .

biography

There are two pieces of information about Hardwicke's place of birth. Some sources name Cameron (Texas), but most of the information about McAllen relates to the border area with Mexico in southern Texas. The daughter of John Benjamin Hardwicke and Jamee Elberta Bennett studied art in Mexico and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in architecture . One of the largest projects ever implemented is a 20-hectare, solar- powered townhouse complex.

In the 1980s she decided to break into the film business and attended the University of California, Los Angeles . From 1986 she worked as a production designer, first in independent films and later on more well-known projects such as Three Kings (1999) and Vanilla Sky from 2001. In 2003 Hardwicke made her debut with the film drama Thirteen , for which she also, together with Nikki Reed , the Script wrote.

Her fourth project as a director, the literary film adaptation of Twilight , which released in November 2008 in the United States, was an international commercial success.

In 2011 she directed the fantasy thriller Red Riding Hood and in 2013 the pilot of the television series Reckless . In the same year she received mostly negative reviews for the film Plush , an adult drama starring Emily Browning in which she served as director, co-writer and producer.

Catherine Hardwicke has received awards for her film Thirteen at numerous film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival , the Nantucket Film Festival and the Locarno International Film Festival .
