There they find the treasure after some time, which is around the gold of Saddam Hussein is that this from Kuwait had stolen. The Iraqi soldiers present are helping to load the stolen goods so that the US soldiers can leave the village as quickly as possible, because the Iraqi military sees their primary task not in defending Saddam Hussein's possessions, but in avoiding a popular uprising .

The US soldiers escape together with the freed Iraqi prisoners but are on the run with CS gas - shells fired, causing them to landmines drive and crash their getaway vehicles. The terrified guards believe Hussein is coming to punish them and, in fear of their president, flee so that Barlow can be freed. In a subsequent firefight with returning guards, Barlow is seriously injured and Vig is fatally injured.

The Americans decide to bring the refugees to Iran , but are stopped shortly before the border crossing by US military police , who arrest Gates, Barlow and Elgin, who had left their unit on their own. The civilian refugees are locked in a pen by Iraqi border guards , and Gates now fears they will be killed after the Americans leave. A profound satirical showpiece in the footsteps of Robert Altman and Richard Lester. "

Carsten Baumgardt von Filmstarts judges that the film is a “brightly colored storm of images” that does not want to subordinate itself entirely to any of the genres “satire, war drama or action film” . "The various elements, which have their charm, never combine to form a homogeneous whole." Three Kings was rated 3 out of 5 points.

Cineclub.de judges, "" Three Kings "describes the events of that time and the situation after the Gulf War quite authentically. The story is told in a gripping manner and with bitter, gallows humor. The patriotism typical of Hollywood is largely dispensed with. Much more typical of Hollywood, however, are the excellent action scenes and the original ending of the film. ” The film received a rating of 81%.

Filmering.at sums up: David O. Russell denounces the absurdity of the war with almost impossible ideas , reckons with foam-whipping soldiers, the media and a lack of decisiveness - certainly unique in this way. If you want to be entertained by good action, have fun with experimental productions, as well as laugh and think, this is the right place. ” The film was rated 8 out of 10 points.

The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency awarded the production the title valuable .
