She lost the election to Gil Cisneros and will run for the seat again in the 2020 House of Representatives election .

Career

Kim was born in 1962 as Kim Young-ok ( 김영옥 ) in Incheon, South Korea. Her parents left the country in 1975 to move to the United States. Kim went to school first in Guam and later in Hawaii . She then studied business administration at the University of Southern California until 1981 . After graduating, she worked in a bank and then took a position as controller of a women's fashion factory. Kim also started and ran her own business in the same industry. In 1986 she married her husband Charles with whom they have four children.

Kim entered politics when she started working for Congressman Ed Royce . In 2014 she defeated the Democrat Sharon Quirk-Silva and entered the California State Assembly. Two years later, Kim was ousted from office by Quirk-Silva.

Kim then applied to succeed Ed Royce as a member of the House of Representatives in 2018. Their victory was long considered likely. If she won, she would have become the first Korean woman in Congress. Ultimately, however, Gil Cisneros won the seat.

Political positions

Kim rejects the Affordable Care Act and advocates tax cuts and dismantling trade regulations. The National Rifle Association supported her in her 2018 election campaign , although she did not actively address her position on gun ownership. Kim was critical of some of the positions issued by the Donald Trump administration on immigration and opposes the separation of refugee children from their families.
