Gilbert Ray "Gil" Cisneros Jr. (born February 12, 1971 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since January 3, 2019, he has represented the 39th congressional electoral district of the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Cisneros was born in Los Angeles. He grew up there and went to school. After graduating from high school , he studied political science at George Washington University . He completed his studies with a Bachelor of Arts . He obtained his master’s degree from Regis University . He then served in the US Navy for eleven years , most recently with the rank of Lieutenant Commander . After completing his military service, he became a manager at Frito-Lay until he was fired in 2010.

Shortly after his release, he won the lottery Mega Millions jackpot amounting to 266 million US dollars . Together with his wife Jacki, he founded the non-profit Gilbert and Jacki Cisneros Foundation , which aims to increase the educational opportunities of young Latinos by awarding scholarships. After winning the lottery, Cisneros studied urban teaching politics at Brown University and graduated with a master's degree.

Cisneros lives with his wife Jacki and their two children in Yorba Linda . You also own a house in Pico Rivera .

Political career

Until 2008, Cisneros was a member of the Republicans . However, he switched to the Democrats because, in his opinion, the Republicans were too ideological.

In 2017, Cisneros announced his candidacy in the 39th Congressional District of California against incumbent Ed Royce . In January 2018, Royce announced that it would no longer run for election. In the open primary, Cisneros landed in second place behind Republican Young Kim . In the main election on November 6, 2018 , Cisneros narrowly prevailed against Kim with 51.6% of the votes cast. Since January 3, 2019, he has represented the 39th Congressional electoral district of California as the successor to Ed Royce in the US House of Representatives.
