Mark James DeSaulnier (born March 31, 1952 in Lowell , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Since January 2015 he has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Mark DeSaulnier studied until 1974 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester history . He then moved to California, where he settled in the city of Concord . In the following years he worked in various industries. Among other things, he worked in the hotel industry. He later ran a few restaurants. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1991 and 1994 he was a member of Concord Town Council. In the meantime, he also served as mayor there in 1993. From 1994 to 2006 he was a member of the District Council in Contra Costa County . For some time he was chairman of this body. In 2003 he completed a political education at Harvard Kennedy School . DeSaulnier was a member of the California State Assembly from 2006 to 2008 ; between 2008 and 2014 he was a member of the state senate there .

In the 2014 congressional election , DeSaulnier was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eleventh constituency of California , where he succeeded George Miller , who was no longer running, on January 3, 2015 . He won with 59:28 percent of the vote against the Republican Tue Phan. Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.
