Joseph F. Holt

Joseph Franklin Holt III (born July 6, 1924 in Springfield , Massachusetts , †  July 14, 1997 in Santa Maria , California ) was an American politician . Between 1953 and 1961 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Holt moved with his parents to Los Angeles at the age of one , where he attended public schools. Between 1943 and 1945 he served in the final phase of World War II in the Marine Corps , in which he rose to lieutenant. After the war he studied at the University of Southern California until 1947 . After that he worked in the insurance industry, among other things. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He became chairman of the Young Republicans in California. During the Korean War he was reactivated for the Marine Corps. He received the Purple Heart for his military services .

In the 1952 congressional elections , Holt was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of California , where he succeeded John Phillips on January 3, 1953 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1961 . These were determined by the events of the civil rights movement and the Cold War . In 1960 Holt renounced another candidacy. In the following years he worked as a business consultant. In 1968 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died on July 14, 1997 in Santa Maria.
