Jim Bates

Jim Bates (born July 21, 1941 in Denver , Colorado ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1991 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Bates attended East Denver High School until 1959 . Between 1959 and 1963 he served in the Marine Corps . He then worked in banking and later in the aviation industry. He also studied at San Diego State University . Politically, Bates joined the Democratic Party . Between 1971 and 1974 he was a member of the San Diego City Council . From 1975 to 1982 he was a district administrator in San Diego County . In the 1982 congressional election , Bates was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the then newly established 44th  constituency of California , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1983. After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1991 .

In 1990 he was embroiled in a sex scandal that cost him his re-election. Two years later he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the 1992 elections . It was later discovered that Bates was involved in the house banking scandal while serving as Congressman . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Jim Bates no longer appeared politically.
