Lucille Roybal-Allard (born June 12, 1941 in Boyle Heights , Los Angeles County , California ) is an American politician . Since 1993 she has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lucille Roybal-Allard is the daughter of the California Congressman Edward R. Roybal (1916-2005). After elementary school, she studied at California State University in Los Angeles until 1965 . She then worked in public relations and for non-profit organizations . At the same time she began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . She was a member of the California State Assembly from 1987 to 1992 .

In the 1992 congressional election , Roybal-Allard was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 33rd  constituency of California , where she succeeded David Dreier on January 3, 1993 . After twelve re-elections so far, she can still exercise her mandate in Congress today. Between 2003 and 2013 she represented the 34th district of her state there as the successor to Grace Napolitano . She has represented California's 40th constituency in Congress since 2013. During her time as Congresswoman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . She is or was a member of the Grants Committee and two sub-committees. She is also a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus . From 1999 to 2000 she chaired the Congressional Hispanic Caucus . Re-elected in 2016, she will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 . Your new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

She has two children and two stepchildren with her husband Edward, a business advisor and former officer in the United States Marine Corps . The family lives privately in Los Angeles.
