Xavier Becerra (born January 26, 1958 in Sacramento , California ) is an American legal scholar and politician of the Democratic Party . From 1993 to 2017 he was a member of the US House of Representatives for California . He has served as Attorney General of the State of California since January 24, 2017 .

biography

After attending McClatchy High School in Sacramento, he first studied economics at Stanford University from 1976 to 1980 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics). He then completed postgraduate studies in law at Stanford Law School and temporarily at the University of Salamanca in Spain with a Juris Doctor (JD) in 1984 . Following his admission, he took up a position as a lawyer before joining the staff of the California State Senator in 1986 Arthur Torres was. He was then Deputy Attorney General of California between 1987 and 1990 .

He began his political career in 1990 when he was elected to the California State Assembly , to which he was a member until 1992.

US House of Representatives

In 1992, Becerra was elected for the first time as a member of the US House of Representatives for the Democrats . After eleven re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate until January 24, 2014. During this time be changed several times due to restructuring constituency . Until 2003 he represented the 30th then until 2013 the 31st district of California. As of 2013, he exercised his congressional mandate for the 34th congressional electoral district. Becerra was Vice Chairman of the House Democratic Conference from 2009 to 2013 , after which he was promoted to Chairman of the House Democratic Conference .

California Attorney General

On December 1, 2016, Governor Jerry Brown appointed him as the new Attorney General of California. He succeeded Kamala Harris , who had been elected to the United States Senate a few weeks earlier . On January 24, 2017, after the state legislature confirmed the nomination, Becerra took the oath of office, becoming the first Latino to serve as the California Attorney General . On the same day he resigned from Congress. In a by-election in June 2017, Jimmy Gomez (D) was elected his successor with almost 60 percent of the vote.

After his re-election in 2017 with 61% of the vote against Republican challenger Steven Bailey , his term of office runs until January 2022.

US Secretary of Health

In December 2020, President-elect Joe Biden nominated him as Secretary of Health in his future cabinet .
