Clarence Frederick Lea (born July 11, 1874 in Highland Springs , Lake County , California , †  June 20, 1964 in Santa Rosa , California) was an American politician . Between 1917 and 1949 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clarence Lea attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Lakeport Academy . This was followed by studies at Stanford University . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Denver and his 1898 admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Santa Rosa in this profession. Between 1907 and 1917 he was a district attorney in Sonoma County . He served as President of the Association of District Attorneys in California in 1916 and 1917. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party.

In the 1916 congressional election , Lea was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of California , where he succeeded William Kent on March 4, 1917 . After 15 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 16 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1949 . These were shaped by the events of the First and Second World Wars . From 1937 Lea was chairman of the Committee on Internal and External Trade. In 1948 he renounced another candidacy.

Between 1949 and 1954 Lea worked in public relations in Washington. He died in Santa Rosa on June 20, 1964.
