Charles Averill Barlow (born March 17, 1858 in Cleveland , Ohio , †  October 3, 1927 in Bakersfield , California ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Barlow attended public schools in his home country. In 1875 he moved to Ventura , California. Since 1889 he lived in San Luis Obispo County . Barlow was a farmer and businessman. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Populist Party . He was a member of the California State Assembly in 1892 and 1893 .

In the 1896 congressional election , Barlow was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of California , where he succeeded James McLachlan on March 4, 1897 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1898, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1899 . These were shaped by the events of the Spanish-American War . Barlow later became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1912 and 1920 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . He died on October 3, 1927 in Bakersfield, where he was also buried.
