Ted W. Lieu (born March 29, 1969 in Taipei , Taiwan ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since January 2015 he has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ted Lieu attended Stanford University until 1991 . He then studied law at Georgetown University until 1994 . Between 1995 and 1999 he served in the United States Air Force , whose reserve he is still a member. After serving in the military, he began to work legally. He was initially employed in the ninth district of the United States Court of Appeals . He then practiced as a private lawyer . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the Torrance City Council . Between 2005 and 2010 he was a member of the California State Assembly ; from 2011 to 2015 he was a member of the California Senate . In 2010 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Attorney General of California.

In the 2014 congressional election , Lieu was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 33rd  constituency of California , where he succeeded Henry Waxman on January 3, 2015 , who had not run for 40 years in Congress . He won with 58:42 percent of the vote against the Republican Elan Carr . Since he was confirmed in his office in 2016 and 2018, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2021 with the option of a further candidacy in 2020.
